To begin with, in second life, I’m a DJ and manager at The Wharf. I host events for other Djs, as well. If you’ve never been to the Wharf, you are missing out on a fantastic place. Chester Howley and Finnegan Chesnokov are the dynamic duo that own the place, and have made it into the awesome place it is today. I love to talk to and meet people. And I love to share my music – hence the DJ thing.
You could say that I spend a great deal of time in and around music on SL. I enjoy exploring various places, whether its a music club, seeing interesting builds, or going shopping and doing things with my friends. I have met some fantastic people, and have grown very close to a few. (more…)

When Iris floated “grunge” as the theme for this issue, she said, by way of suggestion, “Think Mad Max…think Tina Turner.” Ah, I thought, I know what she means—post-apocalyptic fashion. The Thunderdome! But when I started hitting up friends for their favorite grunge outfitters, they mentioned a number of designers, all doing creative work that’s at least as different as it is similar. Is grunge like indecency? Do people just know it when they see it? It seems that grunge is, or at least can be, many things to many people. Here I’ve taken a rather broad view, from urban back-alley chic to grunge kitty gear to steampunk wasteland hardware to, yes, post-apocalypse couture. I invite you to indulge yourselves. (more…)

Sometimes when I go shopping at June Dion’s BareRose Tokyo, it makes me crazy. That could be the lag, which can be ferocious. Or it could be that I can’t walk out of there without clicking BUY at least, oh, four or five times. I usually have a folder in my inventory that contains just the last few things I picked up there, so hopefully I’ll think of them when special occasions arise, or at least remember to try them on at some point. The very existence of this folder inspired the topic (and title) of this post. I’m only surprised it took so long. I’ve had these for at least a little while, so I won’t call them “new.” I checked last night, and there are a number of more recently released designs available now, so some of these have been moved out of the New Items towers at the front of the store. Such are the productivity and prowess of June’s CS3 monkeys.
The “Galaxy Train Ride” ensemble for men makes me happy. The name alone puts a smile on my face. I mean, honestly–can you not think of a dandy gentleman boarding a steam-powered rocket train for a quick jaunt to the center of the Milky Way? And, being a gentleman, of course he’d take along some bread, cheese, fruit and wine for a nice picnic lunch. (more…)

I was in a barren and empty sim, the hour was late and it was dark (I had forced midnight) when a mysterious message urgently demanded my attention. “Your mission, should you choose to accept it: for the next issue of Second Style, highlight some of the best individual designs in SL fashion of the last twelve months. This IM will self-destruct in ten seconds. Nine. Eight….”
I logged out quickly, but not before triggering a sly smile ( }:-> ). I knew that this assignment would challenge me like no other, and I would have to rely on all my skills and training. How to select just a handful of items from the many released over the past year? It seemed…impossible.
Hopefully my superiors will agree that I have succeeded. All of these creations epitomize the best of what SL design has to offer. In chronological order by month of release: (more…)

Whenever I heard the word “romantic” I am immediately reminded of a scene in the movie “Moonstruck.” You know the scene—where Raymond Capomaggi, still madly in love with his wife Rita after many years together and apparently all but undone by the lovers’ moon that seems to be influencing everyone in sight, sings aloud a snippet of Rogers and Hart’s “Isn’t It Romantic?” Apparently, he was a tiger last night.
One thing we can take away from this delightful moment is that romance is not the exclusive province of the young and beautiful—anyone can be romantic. Maybe this is a bit of a stretch, but I think this also suggests that dressing romantically doesn’t just mean lipstick-kissed boxer briefs (not that there’s anything wrong with that)—it can be anything that represents an effort to connect to your significant other and make something special happen for both of you. So what if, as the song says, the weather outside is frightful? I’m such a whore for sweaters and coats as it is, I barely need winter as an excuse. This month you get to benefit from my hedonistic accumulation of cold-weather wardrobe items, as I’m sharing some of my favorites, both old and new.
First up, an old favorite of mine. These Pea Coats by Donmai Frederick, released last winter, have classic lines and a beautiful wool fabric texture. The set includes coats in six colors: Beige, Black, Blue (as shown here), Brown, Gray and Green. A simple undershirt also adds shape and bulk to the coat, so you look like you’re layering properly for the cold weather, just like your mother told you. As if that weren’t enough, you also get four flexi scarves, plain and striped, in short and longer lengths. Undershirt and scarves are tintable, so you can customize to your heart’s content. Also available in a set styled for women. Pick these up for L$300 for the set at Back and Forth (Metabirds 192, 71, 25). (more…)

Hello all, my name is Daman Tenk, and this will be my first Second Life fashion review. As my first review pick I chose a set called Army Tank Boy, by June Dion of Bare Rose. Just in case you never heard of it before, Bare Rose is a store that offers clothing for both men and women, divided in many categories. Most outfits are for sale at very reasonable prices, especially considering the quality of June’s work.
This outfit is available in the men’s casual section for 130 L$ and comes with pants, skirt layer belts, three jacket layer tank tops, one shirt layer tank top, several prim pockets, and a bullet necklace for the finishing touch. The outfit is set as modify/no copy/transfer. (more…)

Sculpties abound in this pair of outfits designed by June Dion for Bare Rose. A casualty of my break, these outfits don’t really count as new anymore, but look at the pictures. They deserve coverage.
I was unimpressed with the first sculptie attachments to clothing. Bell sleeves, flared cuffs– what could sculpties do for fashion that couldn’t be accomplished with regular prims? Well, June showed me. In this first outfit, Man in Black, the hood comes in both regular and neko, the shape suggesting cat ears beneath. It’s a look that’s not replicable with any method other than sculpties. Maybe there’s something to these prims after all.

I had a great time decorating for Halloween last year. I think one of the appeals of Second Life is the opportunity to do things that can’t be done reasonably or maybe even at all in Real Life. In addition to going a little crazy with the house and yard decorations, I also had, um, several different costumes for myself. You may not feel the need to go quite that far, but surely you’ll need at least one. Here are some ideas I’m playing with for this year, some new and some that have been around for a while. I only wore one of these last year, though, so I’m not just recycling things that are already sitting in my inventory! I’ve tried to include a mix of clothing costumes and avatars, although some costumes can be so elaborate that the line between often seems blurred. These are just some personal favorites of mine, and we’re by no means done for the season–you’ll undoubtedly see at least a few more seasonally themed items in the next few weeks.

The grown-ups who remember things from Before call their place the Wastelands. He and his friends grew up in it, played in it, staged their mock battles in it. They just call it the Junkyard. And the way the grown-ups all grumble about how bad things are–what’s so bad? The Junkyard is full of things to play with, and smash, and burn. Amazing things, some that look like great metal birds…why? Maybe there’s not always enough food to go around, but nobody ever dies from hunger. Not any more, not for a long time. Things are getting better, really. If you think about it.
The grown-ups say such strange things, especially when they think the children aren’t listening. What’s a madmax, anyway? Why do their voices sound so funny when they talk about it? “Just like madmax, without the cars.” What does that mean? No one will say. He does know what a car is. He has seen them in the Junkyard, rusted-out metal boxes. He has pulled off their round shoes to burn, or sometimes to make shoes for himself. Not that he really needs them–his feet are tough. I’ve browsed at the BareRose Tokyo shop before, but must confess this is the first time I’ve taken something home. These new Daruma Tanks by designer June Dion caught my eye, though, and I was really curious about how the whole outfit would go together for me, so I grabbed them and ran. I was also curious about the name “Daruma,” so I did a little research (Google is my friend). Daruma is the Japanese name for Bodhidharma, the founder and first patriarch of Zen. A tradition still observed today is that of Daruma dolls, also known as dharma dolls. These are round, hollow Japanese wish dolls with no arms or legs, modeled after Bodhidharma, who is said to have lost the use of his arms and legs after meditating, seated in a cave, for nine years. The Daruma has come to be symbolic of optimism, persistence, and strong determination. A Daruma doll is traditionally given to someone starting a new venture, celebrating a birthday, or at the beginning of a New Year. At the start of an endeavor, one of the doll’s empty eyes is painted in with black and a wish is made for good luck. The other eye is painted when the goal is reached. Hey, I bet you weren’t expecting a cultural history lesson today!
