Once upon a time, there was a boy. But this was no ordinary boy–he was a boy who, perhaps through mutation or other accident of biology, was also a cat. This was unusual enough, but then one day he was bitten by a great wild dog. That’s when things really started to get interesting. (more…)

Ryan: The first thing I noticed about Dimitri is that all of his prim accessories–clothing components, hair, jewelry, glasses–were perfectly fitted. It’s not that I’m constantly going around and checking out how guys have fitted their prims…well, actually I guess I do in fact do that. Hey, it’s part of the job! But almost any guy will let one thing or another slide just a bit, or decide not to lose any sleep over that one last strand of hair. Not Dimitri. I’m pretty uptight about fitting hair myself, so I feel his angst.
Dimitri: Well, I must admit, I was a little nervous when I sent in the application for the guest style consultant. I have been interested in doing something like this for quite some time and when I saw [Ryan's] post on the web site, I jumped at the opportunity. I have been in SL about five months now, but ever since the first month I have really been into men’s fashion. I create my outfits with the intention of being noticed and standing out in a crowd. I am more of a casual guy when it comes to clothes, but I don’t limit myself to that type of style. I also love to dabble in other types. (more…)

Nothing says “I love you” like jewelry. And I’m not just talking about the ladies here–it’s a not-very-secret secret that guys like jewelry, too. I think it’s because there’s so little good lingerie out there for us. I mean, hey, a good pair of boxer briefs and we’re done. (Although, hmm, there are always silks…) I’m not talking about watches, either, at least not today. I love watches, but for me they’re more an accessory item than jewelry. Jewelry is something you wear just because it’s pretty. There, I said it and I’ll say it again: pretty. Deep down, you know it’s true.
In case you haven’t noticed, Valentine’s Day is coming right up, check your calendar! For your gift-giving consideration, I thought I’d suggest some jewelry items that I love and admire. I’m hoping that you (or your man) might like them too.

Starting with this issue, Second Style Magazine dramatically expands its coverage of menswear. Of course, this issue is All Guys, All the Time, but going forward you’ll see more men’s fashions each issue in a variety of new columns and features. I’m very happy no longer to be the sole voice speaking for men in this publication, but the change naturally leaves me wondering—what direction do I take now?
For starters, the name of the column has changed. While menswear doesn’t take up nearly the SL acreage occupied by women’s fashion, it’s still a worthy, growing market and surely deserves more than a “corner.” The new name was a suggestion from Iris that I liked better than my own ideas, and I liked it even more the more I thought about it. Hopefully it also says something about what I’m trying and hoping to do here. (more…)

This year, rather than doing one big “round-up” of Halloween ideas, I thought I’d put together a series of costumes and post them individually in the several days leading up to Halloween. I thought this would not only be more fun, but might also give you a little extra time to do your shopping. I have no idea how many posts there will ultimately be in this series, but I’m hoping for something in the neighborhood of “several,” so check back for more! (more…)

I think it took me four days to get through Hair Fair this year, a combination of spare (okay, I’ll qualify that to “more or less available”) time in my evenings during the week and weekend afternoons. Hey, there was a lot to see–87 hair designers spread across four sims. That’s a workout even if you’re in good shape. Somehow it just felt BIGGER this year, although I know the event took up four sims last year too. [My memory misinformed me--Hair Fair 2007 occupied two sims, not four. See the Comments for the authoritative scoop.] The layout this year was a big change from last year’s more mall-like plan. The build architecture by Rezzable (by Washu Zebrastripe, Damien Fate and Selena Gateaux, hosted in sims provided by Rezzable) reflected Mayan influences, as you can see in the large structure shown here, a kind of “temple” pyramid which served as an arrival/welcome area. There was a comfortably appointed rest area as well as displays featuring custom styles for auction to benefit Locks of Love and winners of a Flickr photo contest. Designer booths were arranged in ranks around the central temple in long rows set at angles to one another. If it sounds confusing–it certainly could be, if for instance I had (hypothetically, of course) crashed or relogged a few times and lost track of where I had already been. If it sounds exhausting to you–I suppose it might be, especially if you tried to do the whole thing in one sitting. If it sounds like fun–well, I had a good time shopping (hair whore that I am) and chatted with some nice people along the way.
Think about it this way: I go to Hair Fair so you don’t have to.

Last time I saw Jesseaitui Petion, he was busy getting his new menswear designs set out, arranged to his satisfaction, and properly priced so he could re-open Aitui to the public. Pretty much every time I’ve seen or talked with him, he’s been pretty mellow, but that night he was a man on a mission. He said that he’d probably be pulling an all-nighter, and I thought, Wow, I thought we gave all that up when we finished college. I guess some things don’t change. He re-opened a few days ago now, so you may have already discovered his new collection, but I wanted to share a few of my favorite items with you here.
I don’t know if Jesse considers his Tokyo Intake Jacket (L$235) the centerpiece of his new collection, but to me it epitomizes the attitude and vibe of his new designs. The jacket is cut high rather than low on the hip, and it can be worn with or without the untucked printed tee (the tee is not on a separate clothing layer and can’t be worn on its own). Although I’m wearing one of Jesse’s scarves here–more on that in a moment–the jacket has a sculpted turned-up collar, which Jesse has thoughtfully provided pre-set for two different attachment points (chest and spine). Several different fabric finishes are available; Charcoal is shown here. I love love love this jacket and I’m already plotting what other cool tees I can wear with it. (more…)

Chances are that you’ve at least heard of Relay For Life, the annual overnight fundraising walk benefiting the American Cancer Society. The event is designed to further awareness of cancer prevention, treatments and cures; to remember those who have been lost to cancer and celebrate survivors; and to raise money for ongoing cure research. The Second Life embodiment of this effort is Relay For Life of Second Life. In 2007, through the efforts of 40 teams RFL of SL raised a grand total of over L$118,000! (more…)

So, the Discord Nightmare City sim is amazingly awesome. First off, its just got awesome atmosphere — divided into smaller streets and sections each with its own feel and type of product. I will admit, though, it is a little bit tough to move around since there is no flying and no teleporting. Second — the prices are rather low. The most expensive items I saw were AOs and extremely prim-heavy outfits, including typing animations, at 250L. And third (and definitely most important) the content is just frickin’ awesome.
Before I prattle on about the owner and his stuff, let me get my announcement out of the way. Starting, well, since the first of the month there’s a hunt/prize/whatever ya wanna call it at the sim. Currently, there are two outfits (one for a guy, and one for a girl) scattered throughout the sim as 12 heart shaped boxes. These boxes are tough to find. Which is why you have a lot of time to find em. Six boxes are parts for the guys, and six boxes are parts for the girls. The six parts for the guys include jacket, pants, prim skirt, left sleeve, right sleeve, and collar/tie. All together, they form the sei-sou outfit (in hana orange) that I’m wearing in the picture. Hunts liked these are planned as part of the future of the sim, so there will always be somethin goin on. (more…)

In Second Life we have the opportunity to express ourselves, via our avatars, in ways that may not be easily accessible to us or even possible in real life. Designer clothing may be daily wear for us in SL, while in real life it’s a luxury that may or may not be possible for us. Changing our skins and hair, though, is a different story—neither quick nor easy in real life, but a matter of a few simple clicks in SL. This issue’s theme is “The Body,” and in this column I want to share with you designs by a few of my favorite skin and hair designers–some new, some old favorites, some you might not have heard of, but I think all are doing great work.
One of my favorite skins in every aspect is “Antonio,” by Funk Schnook. When checking out a skin, I find that I always look first at the face, and I love the way Antonio’s feature detailing (including all the facial hair choices, which are very well done) works on my avatar. Two levels of muscle definition are available, and I remember Funk being a little surprised that he felt the skin worked well on my slim shape, as he had designed it with more “built” shapes in mind. Here you see the less-defined in the Pale skin tone, with the Stubble with Soul Patch facial hair option. L$1850 for a single skin, or L$4500 for a four-pack; demos available in the store. Available in four tintable skin tones and a variety of facial hair and makeup options at FNKY! (FNKY Cake 136, 69, 24). (more…)

So, I was trolling around on the web recently (I get bored at work sometimes, you know how that is) and came across Jesseaitui Petion’s blog, where he’s beginning to share pictures of the progress he’s making on his new skin, called “Reclaim,” currently in the works. I think it’s great when a designer is not only willing to let us in on designs in development but also interested in feedback along the way. Take a look, see what Jesse’s working on, and give him a little encouragement now and then–I think he’ll be glad to hear from you. He says he’s really taking his time, enjoying the work and loving the new skin. His current plan is to have “Reclaim” ready for release in January or February 2008. In the meantime, you can pick up his current skins, due to be discontinued at the end of November, at great sale prices: L$600 for “Premier,” L$900 for “Advance.” (more…)

I grew up for the most part in Southern California, and although I’m not a surfer myself I love the beach communities and their casual, laid-back vibe. Nothing says summer to me quite like the bead and shell jewelry you see on surfers all through the long, hot days of July, August and September. This new jewelry by designer KiKi Miranda would fit right in and be all the rage. KiKi recently joined the design team at Aitui and is bringing her own talents and style to Jesse’s established line. Her new Tapa Necklace and Tapa Bracelets for men feature simple beads in natural colors strung on leather thongs. The larger oblong beads are decorated with intricate designs inspired by traditional tapa cloth artwork, a beautiful touch that fits right in with the Polynesian and tropical influences seen elsewhere in the Aitui line. Jesseaitui Petion has been designing hair for some time, and I can now confess that I was more than a little jealous of all the guys I saw wearing his great casual styles. This is because at first…there was no red. All the styles were black. I tried on the demos and sulked. I hinted once (okay, maybe it wasn’t so subtle, but I swear it was only the one time) that I’d be the first in line if he added reds to his line.
Now, among the other colors, there is red. I’m not taking credit, just making an observation.
I’m covering here just a few of his extensive and growing line of hairstyles (coincidentally, these are the ones I personally liked best for myself): “Convincing”, “Last Flight”, “Sway”, and “Wayward.” (more…)

For those who have been hiding under a rock SL turns 4 years old this week. During all of our careers there have been many ups and downs – n’est-ce pas? – as we all go through our own growing pains in this surreal virtual space.
Within this anniversary week so much is in development or has occurred in the realm of culture relating to the Men’s Second Style blog as well as resident lifestyle in general.
Face of Asia Model Competition. Anyone who can coax those sliders in appearance mode to create a beautiful or handsome Asian shape is encouraged to enter this cultural modeling contest brought to us by the Asian Designers Summit. Contest guidelines can be found at the Women’s Second Style blog or by visiting the Men’s Second Style office, Casa Del Shai, Earthtones Boutique, Muse or Nicky Ree’s Boutique in-world. Face of Asia is open to all residents. Round 1 submissions close June 27, 2007 at midnight SLT.
Nora Body Skins by Sezmra Svarog. Since she teased audiences in mid-April with a sneak peak of her new generation of male skins in development I have been eagerly awaiting the release of her skins. This week, Sezmra displayed a more detailed vision of her skins – each appealing to a different segment of skin consumers: the toned “Hunter” and the svelte “David”. Nora is also offering up some SL4B freebies @ her shop and promises a rehaul of her store and sim.
Second Love Magazine. Tya Fallingbridge and Daphne Molinari announce this week the launch of Second Love Magazine on July 1, 2007. Second Love will be monthly PG publication covering a variety of issues affecting straight and gay residents whether in single, coupled or friendship relationships. The magazine will be accessible in-world and online. The launch party is set for July, 1st @ 7 P.M. SLT game time at Schmooze, Pixel Dreams (12, 146, 21).
As a reminder, if you are aware of any new designers or products that you discover during the week and would like to see included in this segment please look me up and IM me in-world.

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there. Hope you enjoyed it and the kids were good to you.
Keeping the intro short, since I want to get this out as soon as possible.
The update I primarily want to bring to your attention is that Jesseaitui Petion of Renown By Aitui has added The 6 colours to several of his hairstyles. The previously released cuts which were exclusively in black are now being sold in ash blond, golden brown, brown, strawberry blond, red and black. “Convincing”, “Frontal Shag” and “Sway” have currently been revised with the new textures with the other styles to follow. He applies the colours to a new style.

Woo. This week had been … well … different. With the dawn of sculpted prim (“sculptie”) capability, many designers have wasted no time in incorporating this new feature into their products. The results are impressive.
There were actually quite a few new articles I wanted to include in this week’s round-up, however, there was just so much stuff that I couldn’t humanly cram it all in. That being said, I’ll quickly give those who don’t regularly check the forums or other style blogs the heads up that:
- Garbage Prototype of [Random] has created some jeans as well as a set of vest-and-tee combos (fyi, he’s really feeling Lily Allen at the moment).
- Jesseaitui Petion of Aitui Tattoo & Piercing/Renown has rolled out a slew of non-full body tattoos for both sexes at Aitui. He’s also put out flexi neck bandanas and v-necked longsleeves called “Three4th” in 4 colours. And lastly, he’s beefed up his Advance skins which now boasts over 70 skins in 3 light to dark skintones with various facial hair options.
- Lost Thereian of Naughty Designs has released some long-awaited short styles for men (“Dare” and “Modern Edge”).
- Mystikal Faddoul of Mystikal Hair Designs came out with “Brat”, a flexifed style with scultped hat.
- Nephilaine Protagonist of Pixeldolls puts sculpties to the test with a collection of tintable longleeves, jeans, and a velvet jacket.

I’ll keep this short and sweet. This week marked the appearance of some really fun, satirical and all around distinguished articles on the men’s fashion scene. Being a joker-at-heart, as soon as I saw Gadget Gobo and Caroline Apollo’s comical devices I ran down to their stores to take a peek for myself – laughing all the way. Sometimes we all need a little ludicrously funny distraction for our wardrobes. As always designers for all categories of items put out primo content whether you seek the ludicrous or the distinguished that we just can’t help but share with the masses.
While chasing answers to a reader inquiry I had the great fortune to stumble across a skin which may be something worth investigating for those looking for a non-athletic touch.
Dive in and see if there’s something within that suits your tastes.

Following some constructive and pointed feedback from our valued readers the format of this segment as been slightly adjusted. You are really making me work for this. But I enjoy a good challenge. Items have been arranged in categories and descriptions have been made more concise (3 to 5 short sentences each). Due to time and resource constraints designer-created images have been used in the product highlights. If there are any further comments you may have on the changes please feel free to post.
Is it any wonder that this was also a week that was rife with male fashion content? We’ve got a fairly diverse round-up with amongst the categories in addition to two sales. And of course I felt obligated to write about the quality products I saw and/or tried on.

I managed to wittle down this week’s bulletin to only four items, which affords me the opportunity to spend a little more time to focus on each. And I’m doing it completely guilt free.
For those who regularly follow the blog this marks the fourth week we’ve put out this weekly wrap-up and we’d appreciate your feedback since we’re doing it for you, kids. Is it working for you? Not working? Are you completely ambivalent or uncaring? We want to know and can handle any criticisms you may have.

If you were just sitting around wallowing in the fact that you really need a skin but are seriously short on Lindens, I’ve got great news for you. Jesseitui Petion of ‘Aitui Tattoo & Piercing’ and ‘Renown by Aitui’ is giving one lucky winner an entire set of his new soon-to-be-released ADVANCE photoreal skin line. Be the 400th person to leave a chat message on the laptop in the entrance of the Renown store (click here for an image). If you miss the display you really need to take a trip to your ophthalmologist.
Entry is simple. You click the laptop, follow the prompts and leave a message. If you’re the 400th to do so, huzzah, you’ve just won.
For more information visit the store or join the update group by searching for Aitui Tattoo & Piercing in group search and checking the notices.

What hath Catero wrought?! I wanted to start this segment as a means to briefly sum up seven days worth of men’s style news while still fulfilling the commitments of the real world and maintaining some level of fun in Second Life. There were tons of stuff that warranted coverage this week! Some designers have kept me busy with multiple product releases and the skin market has been in overdrive, not to mention the opening of Hair Fair ’07.
I highly suggest that you surf the waves of lag and visit Hair Fair. Several stylists (old and new) have some interesting styles for their male customers and its a great opportunity to see where in-world hair trends are heading. Did you know that the AVEDA institute established its presence in SL this week (check the details on the ETD blog)?

It’s often difficult to balance one’s real life with one’s Second Life pursuits. As a reviewer I am often riddled with a guilty conscience when I am unable to complete product coverage on some of the great items I view on a weekly basis. I can only imagine whether Ryan and Ben also suffer from Reviewer’s Remorse Syndrome (RRS) or not.
Efforts to soothe my inner turmoil have given rise to ‘This Week in Men’s Fashion’ where I hope to give concise overviews on some of the quality goods popping up all over the grid that enhance the male shopping experience. Through commenting, please lend us your thoughts on this trial component for the blog.
With that being said, let’s take a look this week’s offerings by:

Designer Jesseaitui Petion of Renown has some of the best cloth textures around, and he’s putting them on some of the most interesting shirts I’ve seen in recent memory. If you’ve seen our reviews of (or own!) some of his other shirts, you already know what I’m talking about. Jesse’s new Sexy Button-Down Shirts are aptly named–they are the sexy, and high-class sexy at that. Jesse knows that sometimes a guy just wants to show off what he’s got, and he’s not afraid to help you do just that. You could wear a plain tee under these…but why? (more…)

He claimed his focus was purely in creating tattoos and that the possibility of developing a clothing line was highly improbable. No interest whatsoever. Then came Renown. He said he would never design skins. Totally out of the question. Less than a week ago Aitui Premier skins were released. The bottomline: there’s no convincing Jesseaitui Petion to not use his creative talents. Ladies and gentlemen, he can’t even convince himself.
Within a short period Petion has expanded his brand beyond body art to include apparel and now skins. The line debuted with the “White” mid-toned skin (pictured left), closely followed several days later by a lighter “Fair” and nicely bronzed “Island” tones. The inspiration for developing the skins was born from two motivators: a desire to (1) accomodate variance in the skin market, and (2) provide more cost accessible options. (more…)

Have you ever noticed how the International Male catalog just follows you around? I mean, once you’re on the mailing list–and who knows how that happens in the first place?–it’s for life. You can move and leave no forwarding address, but it’ll find you. It’s always just there, waiting in the mailbox. Or, hmm, maybe that’s just me. These slick new lace-up shirts by Jesseaitui Petion of Renown feel to me like upscale re-interpretations ofone of those”classic” IM designs (undoubtedly called something awful like “Pirate Shirt”) that you might look at in the catalog but never order, or order but never wear, or wear but wonder if you’re really pulling it off. If you say these are a bit of a leap for most guys, I’d agree, but I’d argue that they’re one worth making. They’re beautifully textured, have a great, slinky fit, and have already earned me some compliments. (more…)
