You meet the most interesting people when you take public transportation. Traveling by bus is always at least a potential adventure, and trains are both fun and fascinating, but subways are almost an ecosystem all their own. Maybe it’s the whole underground thing—it effectively separates and distances you from life on the surface, and with nothing to see outside the windows except the station stops, the city above retreats into mind and memory and ceases to be a presence. At least until you exit and return to the surface. (more…)

My affinity for “contemporary casual” clothing—and surely you know this about me by now—is both a gift and a curse. (In fact, I kind of hate the phrase itself. If anyone knows of or has come up with a better description, please please please let me get what I want…er, leave a comment!) It’s a gift because there’s a lot of it out there to choose from. It’s a curse because, let’s face it, a lot of what’s out there is sadly repetitive, derivative, unoriginal, ordinary, or just not very interesting. It was the fabulous fabulist Theodore Sturgeon who famously observed that “90% of everything is crap.” (Okay, what Ted actually said was “crud,” but I’m fond of the misquotation.) The challenge lies in the finding of the 10% that isn’t.

LTHOUGH MANY OF HIS OTHER products are not aimed at all of us, men of any orientation should know about and probably own some of Prynce Llewellyn‘s finely composed and hard-working suits. These are strongly-styled but structurally simple suits, with no fussy prim attachments but plenty of layers and options.
Tweed Suit is probably my favourite. Wear it with a retro, pale matching sweater, or a traditional white button-down shirt. Wear the shirt with the collar buttoned or unbuttoned or with a necktie of matching colour. Everything just matches, everything just works. (more…)

Every once in a while, my inner kitty wants to get out and play.
He has different moods. Mostly he’s friendly and playful, but sometimes he’s territorial and defensive. Once in a blue moon, usually after he’s watched “X-Men” yet again, he’s bold and aggressive. You might even call him scrappy. You’d definitely want to watch out for the claws. (more…)

a crazily optimistic statement about our self-understanding as human beings. That an artist like Keth Mommsen puts the effort and energy into designing virtual clothing as distinguished and elegant as her ‘David’ suit for men, and that apparently there are now enough men who value such quality to make these efforts rewarding, warms my analogue heart.
It’s a black tux, there are no grey or white or brown versions. And the shirt is always white. But there is a veritable rainbow of colours of vest and matching cravat ties. Oh, and what ties. It was the cravat that made David a must-own for me. Rich, extravagant bunched fabric, almost more a scarf but tied like a tie; lovely! (more…)

ven though the poster only had photos of women on it, I took a chance and bought Sonatta Morales‘s Charleston glasses for L$100. It was the right decision. These beauties feature great tortoise-shell rims with brass arms and fittings. Darned if they don’t feel right at home with any outfit from contemporary to 1920s period-piece to steam-punk.
There are three copies of the glasses in the folder: clear glass (shown), sunglasses and dark sunglasses. The permissions are set to No Transfer. Out of the box, they’re too small for a male avatar and they attach to mouth rather than nose, but they’re modify ok, so I was able to attach to nose, and move them into position and enlarge them just fine.
Charlestown glasses are available from Sonatta Morales at her main store in Ballyboo.

WEET SWEET SIMPLICITY and sumptuous rich, detailed texture: this is what Asalt Eames offers at the Sweetaholic Kimono Shop. The owner and creator of both the Sweetaholic and grasp lines has created what might must be the garment in all of SL that best combines subtle elegance with comfort.
I refer to the Yukata number 04. Darkly luxurious, it is the reverse of ostentatious, and thus forms a paradox: the inky depth of black speaking of formality and gravity in such an informal garment. One is tempted to reply to one’s wisecracking friends “This is no bathrobe, it’s a Yukata,” except that, in Japanese, Yukata actually means “bathing clothes.”
But what a bathrobe! Up close, this is detailed and wonderful. The complex stripes and geometric designs in the fabric are very contemporary takes on traditional motifs and then there is the absolutely knockout enigma of a silver fleur-de-lis on a chain attacted to the obi (belt). There are, I’m told, similar symbols in many cultures, including Japanese. But it is so like the French representation. So beautiful, so perfect… yet… what in the world is it doing there? (more…)

HREE WORDS about Connors‘ Dress Shirts, gentle reader: Consider the Fatpack.
I mean, just look at the fabric of Dress Shirt in Navy. The pattern of light and shade is beautiful in itself, but where there is light, you can almost see each thread in the weave. And the jewel-like depth of the colour blue is nothing short of delicious.
It’s summer here in Europe, so the shirt being so unbuttoned isn’t worrying me. But don’t let the irony pass you by. This is a dress shirt, but made to be worn in the most comfortable and casual way.
Now prepare yourself for a surprise and the reason for my advice about the fatpack. (more…)

It’s unlikely (although just barely possible) that you require an introduction to Lapointe & Bastchild, the collaborative goth brand by Paul Lapointe and Bastchild Lotus. After all, the brand has been around since, oh, somewhere around forever in SL terms. Why, even I myself have worn the occasional L&B design, whether shoes, jewelry or what have you. But woe unto me—for whatever reason or combination of reasons, before now I haven’t shown off any full outfits or significant clothing items. It’s more than past time for me to correct this error in my ways. (more…)

or me to wear a shirt on top rather than a jacket or coat, it has to be special. I found just such a shirt at Traken Damone‘s shop Flavor: this is Kaine button-up shirt in Gold.
The styling is good and the prim pieces fit even my unusual shape, which is always a relief. But it is particularly the richness of the colours that makes this shirt so special to me. It’s called gold, but the rich earthy browns and soaring sky blue highlights are spectacular.
Kaine is also available with other designs, ranging from innocuous broad appeal like the deep dark violet Kaine Celt, or nearly oriental flower “Kaine Blood” in dark maroon and black, to the manga-drawn Kaine Guns and Lovecraft-esque Kaine Mech. (more…)

I’m fairly certain I’ve said here before that I could wear clothing by risey Arai exclusively for the rest of my second life, and be perfectly happy. risey’s designs for :sey are so realistic, accomplished and comfortable-looking that there’s something not just to admire but to love in every one. I’ve featured my share (or more) of his creations here in the past, including some that are all of the above and sexy as well. This time out, I’ve got not just one but (count ‘em!) five shirts, jackets and hoodies, each of which is all but impossible to resist. This may seem like overkill, but I prefer to consider it abundance. If it’s excessive, it’s a glorious excess. (more…)

One of the many things I like about SL is the opportunity it provides to explore, albeit virtually and to a necessarily limited extent, aspects of cultures other than one’s own. Like me, you probably have several favorite places to visit in SL, and I’m willing to bet that at least some of them don’t look like your RL neighborhood. Perhaps you like Paris in springtime, Barcelona in the fall, or the dark side of the Moon. A recent series of more-or-less random TP hops brought me to a fairly impressive replica of the Taj Mahal, and I was inspired to outfit my avatar appropriately for a return visit. (more…)

He had traveled much of the world, enough (he was confident) that his opinion could be considered an informed one. He had seen much of what there was to be seen, stood and walked in places few men had ventured, and eaten foods that most could not begin to imagine. He had visited places beautiful and forbidding, civilized and savage, welcoming and hostile. It was difficult if not all but impossible to surprise him. Imagine, then, his astonishment when he stepped off the boat at Adelaide, onto the dock, and into Paradise. (more…)

here are new sculpted-prim shoes at Guu Nishi‘s House of Curios Industries (HOC) and they are both stunning and inexpensive. We’ve featured HOC running shoes before: Rhys Ackmann, a guest consultant, loved his Bolts; Ryan wore some chucks as part of a rock-a-billy outfit and once called HOC‘s Skoochers “The best $10 shoes I’ve ever seen.” The new extended shoe selection at HOC offers phenomenal value for money and their flexibility makes them the new “Go To” shoes.
The newest pair in the HOC range are the Easy Striders, these comfortable slip-ons come with textures serious enough for business and others that are casual enough to wear with shorts.
Many HOC shoes have tags with the company initials; on the Easy Striders, this is a little metal piece on the piping around the top of the shoe. Click the shoes to be presented with a blue dialog box to change texture. There are 10 texture possibilities in all, although the last 5 are only unlocked to HOC group members (you’ll need to have membership activated when you put on the shoe to enable the extra textures). All this for L$75! Copy and Modify are allowed; no Transfer. Also in the folder is a version of the shoes for Viewer 2. From what I’ve heard on the forums, I hope to never see that particular version in person. (more…)

I hardly know what to think any more, much less say, when Eponymous Trenchmouth releases a new shoe creation. At some point, one runs out of superlatives. There are just no more words. At least, there are no good ones left that I haven’t already used.
That said, my first response to Epo’s recently released Kool Kats loafers was, “Oh, these look terribly smart.” Epo’s reply: “Thank you. I was inspired by an old pair of two-tone Hush Puppies! The green ones are copied from mine. But my favorites are the Umber ones—not so much a color as an absence of same.” (more…)

Well, I had pretty much zero luck a while back when I tried selling myself off, or at least adopting myself out, with the pathetic kitty look. I thought it was surefire, a complete no-brainer, but no such luck. Oh sure, a few people made offers in the comments, but did anyone ever come through with anything real? I’m talking about money, houses, gourmet caviar and gold-plated, diamond-studded scratching posts here, not just a litterbox in the corner. I figured anyone and everyone would love a sad kitty. Hey, it works for puppies, right? So where and how had I gone so wrong? I resolved that I would figure this out or cry trying. (more…)

ithin the last week or two, Italian designer Sissy Pessoa has brought in a wealth of new men’s shirts and trousers for summer. I’ll show you a few of those in a minute. First, though, let me tell you about my favourite outfit that’s been out for a while. This is Nathaniel Suit in blue from Baiastice. (As usual, click the picture to see the full-sized version.)
There’s something very casual about the cut of the jacket. And it doesn’t hurt that the material looks like denim, especially on the blue version. The light and colour play on the fabric wonderfully, making it a fascinating garment to look at. The trousers in particular win my admiration. Note that since they are low-waisted, a shirt that is only on the shirt- or undershirt-layer will leave a gap. Even wearing the jacket there’s a tiny triangle of a hole where the underlying layer shows through at the waist. But with the right shirt (here I’m wearing an Oxford from Schadenfreude), I find these are currently my favourite trousers. (more…)

ecause my avatar is unusually short and slight by SL standards, the growing trend of shirts and jackets to have prim cuffs, collars and lapels (sensible as it is to use 3D objects to represent parts of RL garments that are 3D) is unsettling. But in a few pieces, Winter DiPrima of Laqroki has managed to create prim-based collars that work — at least for me.
Buying myself garments with important sections that are prims is a form of gambling. Laqroki‘s High Collar Coat in Navy Blue was, my friends, the jackpot. It’s available in a range of colours, white, beige, grey, dark grey, military green and black, but the navy blue version seemed to me an exceptionally deep and beautiful hue. As well as the garment, given to us on undershirt, shirt and jacket layers, there is a prim skirt, prim sleeve details and the prim collar, which also adds the 3D pockets. All the pieces are tied together visually not only wtih the navy blue colouring, but also with some very distinctive large metal rings.
I have a lot of coats in my inventory, but High Collar Coat has got to be one of my two or three favourites. Much to my surprise, one of my favourite features is the collar, which is just a wee bit exagerrated… just a wee bit manga. What a brilliant piece of artistry. (more…)
