Wicked styles

sweater_vest_nouveau_jeans.jpgWow, um, sorry about that post title.  Apparently I’m pathologically unable to resist a pun, even a fairly obvious one.  I’m also such a sucker for sweet fabric textures, I can’t even tell you.  Maybe this is why I find Wicked Loudon’s new menswear designs so appealing.  After all, one could argue that, on the surface, they’re not necessarily breaking much new ground from a design perspective.  Sweater vest with shirt?  T-shirt?  Jeans?  Ho-hum, I hear you saying…some of you, anyway, and you know who you are.  But surely there’s room enough in the world for designers to put their own spin on familiar items, and hopefully, just maybe, bring something to them that’s fresh?  I like to think so.  Because here’s the thing: a good designer can take a familiar design and bring freshness to it, even if it’s “only” the designer’s own unique stylistic tweaks.  I don’t know about you, but in RL I have more than one pair of jeans.  Let’s not even talk about shoes.  And am I a whore for a beautiful sweater?  You bet your ass I am. {AHC} by AlexanderHunter Rembrandt

ahc_valenciaga_shop_lounge.jpgIn SL, I try to get out of my RL box, from time to time at least.  Isn’t that a big part of what SL is for, really?  My recent Prince of the Underworld is miles removed from anything I’d wear in RL, probably even for Halloween, if only for practical reasons.  Stuff like that is a lot of fun, and it’s good to stretch.  I do have my comfort zone, though, and every once in a while I run into some new designs that seem quite literally tailor-made for me and my own tastes.  AlexanderHunter Rembrandt’s just-opened {AHC} (the initials stand for “AlexanderHunter’s Couture”) houses just such a collection.  AlexanderHunter says that his goal with {AHC} is “class and excellence with just a hint of sexiness for both men and women…haute couture and accessories inspired by real life’s top designers.  The collections are seasonal and therefore available only for a few months, making every design a limited edition.”  The names of the various specialty shops at {AHC} reflect these inspirations:  Dulce & Ghanel women’s wear; Valenciaga men’s wear; Prava men and women’s footwear; Vuittior men and women’s jewelry, handbags, and additional accessories; and San Lauren men and women’s skins and hairstyles.  They also convey a slyness and sense of fun suggesting that AlexanderHunter isn’t taking himself too seriously. Deserted: DT gets busy again

lucky_hustler_seeker.jpgIt’s good to know that some things don’t change.  Or maybe Alphonse Karr had it right, and the truth is more along the lines of his famous saying, “Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose” (usually translated as “The more things change, the more they stay the same”).  I could get all philosophical, and bore you to death, but fortunately for you that’s not why we’re here today.

No, we’re here to talk about clothing.  Men’s clothing.  Casual men’s clothing, in fact.  I don’t have to imagine your shock and surprise—I can feel it from here!  Now, it’s true, I admit it—I don’t always give a lot of love to jeans and tees.  It’s true that pretty much anyone and everyone who sells clothing in SL has taken a stab at jeans and tees, commodity items that they are.  But it’s also true that, in spite of their commodity status, it’s possible to do them well, even exceptionally so.  Some of my favorite jeans and tees have consistently come from the creative minds and artistic talents of Donovan Brennen, Dragontat Zagato and Zabitan Assia. Simple elegance: Men’s jewelry at LOAQ

maori_necklace_bracelet.jpgI don’t wear a lot of jewelry in real life.  Oh, I have a few items I love and wear regularly.  Pretty much every day I wear the Celtic knot ring in silver that I bought from a street vendor in Dublin, as well as a simple but unusual fleur-de-lis pendant I found in New Orleans.  I also have my grandfather’s gold high school class ring (Class of 1932), which gets pride of place on my right hand (the middle finger—he was a big man) on special occasions.  From time to time, I wear a watch, although mostly these days I rely on my mobile phone to tell me the time—strictly functional, not especially classy.

But SL is different.  And I don’t mean just because in SL I can afford all kinds of extravagant jewelry that I could never even dream of touching in RL.  I mean, that’s true of course—I can do that if I want to, and I certainly have.  But that’s not the only difference.   Equally real is the possibility of exploring different aspects of one’s personality by venturing into different genres, styles and themes that in RL might not take first priority or even be accessible. Deadwool by Masa Plympton

otto_suit_full.jpgThey told me I could find the tailor’s cabin out in the forest of Isola Gavia.  I was at first a bit taken aback—this would be no easy trek of a day or two and, as I would not be able to bring my horse across the channel, I would be on foot on the island.  I was given further pause when I learned that my guns would not be welcome.  What manner of place was this?  I was assured that my safety would be in no way compromised.  This tailor, Masa by name, was reputed to be among the very best, and I was, after all, in great and dire need of one or more new suits of clothing.  So saddled up and I undertook the journey with high hopes and, truth be told, some small apprehension.

The traveling directions I had been given were clear and accurate, and I was met at the channel crossing by a man of quiet demeanor and serious but not dour expression.  We negotiated payment for the crossing and return.  “Will you be staying the night, sir?  There are accommodations to be found, and entertainments to be enjoyed.”  I felt certain that I could not sleep the night without my guns nearby, and told the man I would meet him to return an hour before sundown.  He nodded, and then he helped me to stable my horse and silently took my guns when I offered them.  I found myself feeling not just vulnerable but somehow unclothed without them. High-gloss accessories: YV by Yvette Vultee

yv_01.jpg
I don’t often venture into the realm of what could be called High Fashion.  I guess it’s just not my thing.  Now, when I say High Fashion I don’t mean Italian suits, expensive tuxedos, diamond-studded watches, that kind of thing.  No, I’m talking about slick, celebrity-worthy clothing and accessories that in RL have price tags that range from extravagant to exorbitant to unthinkable, at least for you and me.  The kind of designs you see on models in high-gloss layouts in big, shiny style magazines.  The ones you leave out on your coffee table so people will think you’re Somebody. Further outside the box: Menlosophy [ii]

This post is Part II of my coverage of Menlosophy, designs by Amanda Bolero and ziamela Loon.  You can read Part I here.

chess_shirt_black.jpgOne of the more traditional Menlosophy designs is undoubtedly the Chess shirt.  When I say “traditional,” I don’t mean it as a slam–it’s not code for “conventional” or even ”old-fashioned”–and I mention it at all only because I’ve said so much in this context about getting outside the box.  This shirt may still have one sleeve inside the box, but it’s such a handsome design, in such a challenging fabric print, that I can’t help but love it.  The cut is flattering, and the tight check print is potentially problematic but done so well that it looks better than it has any right to do.  Sculpted collar and cuffs are pretty much de rigeur for dressy shirts these days, and many casual shirts as well.  Here the collar is casual but smart, with sharply creased edges and crisp points.  The cuffs are equally casual but softer, rounder, and they looked comfortably turned-up.  L$150. Outside the box: Menlosophy [i]

velvet_jacket_verde.jpgYou’ve heard it.  So have I.  People complain not just about the relative dearth of menswear designs in SL (in comparison to the vast selection available for women, and although I suffer no shortage of fine items to feature here I think this is still generally true), but about the “sameness” we often see as well.  (Sometimes it seems like everyone with Photoshop and a Wacom tablet has a shop selling jeans, tees and polos.)  They want something interesting, fresh, original–”outside the box.”  Hey, I’ve been known to join in that chorus myself.  I’m a big fan of contemporary casual clothing, too, but within that fairly broad category it seems like there should be more room for exploration.

With their new collection at Menlosophy, design partners Amanda Bolero and ziamela Loon push the envelope and stretch the boundaries more than just a bit.  Sure, much of the collection qualifies as “contemporary casual”–what’s not to love?–but few of any of the designs are simple or ordinary.  One of my favorite pieces is the Velvet jacket, shown here in Verde.  (more…)

Noble Traveler Collection: Arcavim by Drack Diesel

noble_traveler_collection.jpg
Every once in a while, I run into clothing designs that impress and even amaze me on every level: technical, artistic, aesthetics, style.  It is, to say the least, an impressive accomplishment.  Not because I’m difficult to please–I like to think that I’m selective and discriminating, but taste is after all highly subjective–but because of the amount of work the designer/artist has done to create the designs.  I simply can’t imagine the the hours of painstaking effort it must take to create the textures, sculpts and prim designs that go together to make a virtual item that feels fully real.  It makes my eyes cross and my head hurt just to think about it. Geekboys need love too [i]

short_sleeve_dress_shirt_suspender_pants.jpgThink back to high school.  Go on, you can do it, it wasn’t that long ago.  Now, be honest–with yourself, if no one else: Were you a 98-lb. weakling?  A math geek?  A member of the Chess Club?  Here, I’ll go first.  I was all of the above (okay, French Club, not Chess Club, but still).  I was a geekboy, and proud of it!  Well, I’m proud of it now.  So it’s with no small frisson of delight (French Club, remember?) that I first surveyed and then tried on myvegancookbook Bolissima’s line of geekboy couture, out now at Adjunct.  It’s all there, everything you remember–well, everything but the plastic pocket protector.  And who knows?  That could be in the works even as we speak.

Consider this classic ensemble.  Maybe this was you, or another boy in your class, but somebody in your experience dressed just like this.  Maybe he (you?) had no choice then, but now we do, and it’s empowering to take it back.  The Short Sleeve Dress Shirt I’m wearing here can only be worn tucked in, of course–what self-respecting geekboy wears a dress shirt untucked?  There’s a front patch pocket, and the white buttons are buttoned all the way to the top. No one would expect otherwise.  Three colors, L$100 each. (more…)

Sexy is as sexy does

sexy_is_as_sexy_does_800.jpgLife is like a box of chocolates.  That’s all I have to say about that.  Sexy is as sexy does.  Okay, neither Forrest nor his mother ever said that last one.  It sounds like something my granny might have said, if she hadn’t been raised so very prim and proper.  My granny, and my grandad for that matter, had a million little sayings.  One of her favorites was: “Some people just ain’t happy unless they ain’t happy.”  I remember her using that one a lot when I was little.  I didn’t understand what it really meant until years later, but then I realized it was one of the most true things I’ve ever heard.

What, then, is sexy?  We could probably spend all day on that one and never agree, and even then neither your S.O. nor mine might agree with either of us.  Sexy is a puzzle, a conundrum, a challenge.  All I can say with certainty is that most of us would say we know it when we see it.  Far from being a cop-out, that too is a profoundly true thing, if only because our evaluation process for what is sexy is, ah, not entirely cerebral.  It isn’t just our brains that know from sexy. Steampunk Outfitters : LCC & Steinwerk Designs

steampunk_accessories.jpgI love me some steampunk.  Truly, I do.  So it was with no small pleasure that I explored the various accessories, clothing and other design offerings by Luther Carfagno at his shop, LCC.  As will be made clear in short order, rather than the more typical Victorian-era styles, I was inspired by certain of Luther’s designs to shoot for a steampunk look that’s kind of contemporary.  I think it works; you be the judge.

Among Luther’s relatively few clothing designs are the Lowrise Pants.  These are indeed most certainly low-rise, so much (little?) so that you would never find them in any Victorian gentleman’s wardrobe.  Such decidedly 21st Century styling more or less dictated the straight-ahead contemporary look I ultimately decided on.  The Lowrise Pants come with larger and smaller sculpted cuffs, for larger and smaller avies (or, I suppose, really baggy cuffs).  $100 a pair in four colors: Black, Blue, Brown and Green.  As with a beetle’s hard wings, the pants often just look dark, but then the lighting will change and you realize they’re actually shot through with color.  Also, although dark and unfaded, they aren’t just smears of charcoal gray–there’s noticeable fly and pocket detailing.  The low low rise is dead sexy and worth a shopping trip, even if you’re not so much into the steampunk. World influences @ Zanzo + Shades @ Steinwerk Designs

rajasthani_shirt_fifth_avenue_denims.jpgI first found Theodore and Drusus DuCasse’s Zanzo a while back quite by accident–or maybe it was serendipity intervening, which is always fun.  I noticed one of the small satellite shops (I think it was the one at The Wharf), did a little browsing, and took a few things home.  Ultimately I ended up at the seriously extensive main store, which is laid out like small, themed specialty shops along a central main “street.”  This layout seemed both smart and convenient, as it makes it easy to browse and shop for items in a particular style or genre, if you have something specific in mind.

King’s Road is Zanzo’s new line of menswear, inspired by different cultures across the world.  It was launched recently with an introductory selection of nine different clothing designs, most enhanced with sculpted attachments.  Here I’m presenting a cross section of these new designs, including some of my own favorites. Review: Young Urban by Trevor Turner

vest_no_shirt.jpgWhen I recently put together a new and very different avatar for myself (in response to a Style Throwdown challenge from Express), I never intended for him to be a one-shot deal.  Frankly, the investment (in skins, hair, and attitue) was not exactly insignificant, and I not only planned but promised to bring him back now and then.  I figured, if nothing else, he’d provide a way for me to explore and present some designs that might not otherwise be quite Ryan’s style.

Trevor Turner has been creating the Young Urban line for a good while now, refining his technique along the way, and his recent designs, while still low-key and relatively straightforward, have been ever more polished and interesting.  Take for example the Vest shown here.  The neckline scoops casually low, the fabric texture is slightly, comfortably rough rather than refined and smooth, the shading depicts realistic tugs and tension in the fabric rather than arbitrary wrinkles.  Wear it alone, with tee, or with short-sleeved white shirt and prim cuffs.  L$190 each in four colors: Black, Blue, Brown and Grey. argrace_mood.jpgThe ARGRACE Fall/Winter collection by AIR Winx is, in a word, impressive.  A good double handful of the designs have been burning a hole in my inventory for several days now–I’m long overdue sharing them with you.  Although I love and enjoy exploring some of the incredible variety of themed clothing you can find in SL, there’s still a place in my heart (and room in my wardrobe) for contemporary designs.  A beautiful sweater, a handsome jacket, an eye-catching accessory: these all make me happy.  If they do the same for you, I’d be surprised if you don’t find something here worth taking home. Designer: JHZ Store for Men

JHZ_01.jpgI’m back again, this time with a review of JHZ. JHZ is a small store that advertises as selling High Definition clothes for men. The style is somewhat urban with baggy, worn jeans and tight T shirts.

Some of the shirts they sell are branded with first life brand logos. I won’t cover these by blog policy. I’ll cover the jeans, some original t shirts and some layered tees though. The store also makes some accessories, of which I’m showing the bracelets in my review.

I’ll start with the jeans. The texture is quite ‘crispy’ and sharp. The only blurry area I saw on the jeans was around the crotch, but that was completely the fault of the SL mesh. I’m sure we’ve all seen how SL distorts baggy or loose clothing. Since the pants are modify enabled I fixed it for myself by lowering the crotch height from 33 to 15. (more…)

Review: Kari by Menno Ophelia

hoodie_rebel_jeans.jpgI was so impressed with the beautiful Emvee Cuba build by Menno Ophelia that I did “location photography” there for not just one but two of my recent posts–and I still haven’t exhausted all of its possibilities.  It seemed something of an interesting coincidence, then, when I heard about Menno’s new clothing and accessories shop, Kari.  It took me a few days (I got sidetracked by Hair Fair, so shoot me), but on my first visit to Menno’s shop I found myself grinning more often than not as I perused the eclectic selection.

roborock_tee_rebel_jeans.jpg“Kari has been in creation for over a year,” says Menno.  “My style is not the easiest to describe, but basically it is unisex clothes, sculpted shoes, accessories,  posed props and whatever I feel like making.  My influence comes from personal things I wear, like to wear and see on the streets [of Amsterdam] on a daily basis.”  I can only speak for myself, but I admire designers who follow their bliss, so to speak, simply creating things that appeal to them.  I honestly believe that, when a designer is excited, passionate and having fun, that shows through in their work.

“If you build it, they will come”?  Yeah, it’s a cliché, I know.  But still.  :D

Review: King for Men

argyle.jpgWhere do you go to get your wow outfits? The answer to that tells me a lot about you. But now… where do you go to get your staple clothes? That tells me even more. In your closet, it isn’t the dramatic outfits on their luxury form-fitting hangers that reveal your character as much as the rest of the stuff, hanging on wire hangers and folded up in your drawers.

And so it is that while I love the sudden thrill of finding a shop with something new and wild, I’m just as impressed when I can walk around the shop and gradually come to the conviction that, yeah, they sell just about everything and I could pretty much wear any of it quite happily.

Such a shop is Kerem Lunt’s King for Men.

Take for instance my first combination. The brown Canvas Trousers (L$145 in brown, light brown or black) have a nice earthy glow to them. They attract the eye, but are willing to yield attention back to the top, the red Argyle Sweater (L$135 in light brown, white, red, grey, green or brown; the white comes with a black shirt peeking through underneath, all the others have a white one). See what I mean, though? Wear an outfit like this and no one is going to gasp. But those with an eye, those with discernment, the ones you want to notice… they’ll notice. (more…)

Designer Review: Primitive Design

PD_Zipper.jpgPrimitive Design is one of those stores I’ve been familiar with for quite some time, and had on my list of places to review for nearly just as long. For some reason I’ve never gotten to it however, I should blame my lack of time in the past. A few days ago the creator Geyer Schnyder gave me a full tour of the store however after a mention of Ryan - and now here I am, finally writing the review I’ve been meaning to do for ages.

The store makes items of a grungy urban/street style. They sell pretty much everything you need for a full avatar, including skins since a few days ago. The skins are only available in two white skintones however, so I can’t review them. Luckily I’ll already have my hands full enough with the clothes and accessories.

I have put two full outfits together with the store’s items, and will show those in the review. There’s so much more for sale though that you should definitely check the place out. My goal here is to give you an idea of the designer’s work in general, so I’ll try to keep it as short as I can by not spending more than a paragraph on each individual item. (more…)

Casual elegance for summer:

Common Thread by meriwell Faddoul

threads_button_tee_green.jpgIf you’ve been searching for the perfect casual wardrobe for summer, you may need look no further than Common Thread by meriwell Faddoul.  I didn’t know what to expect when I made my first visit to meriwell’s shop, but the clean designs and gelato-bar color palette brought back memories of Don Johnson in “Miami Vice.”  In the best possible way, of course!

I’ll start with simple and classic.  The Threads Button Tee (L$100) has a button-up front, collar and chest logo, so for my money it’s more polo than tee.  I’m not going to quibble, though.  It’s available in a handful of colors, and shown here in Green and White.  Here and throughout I’m also wearing meriwell’s Light Linen Trousers (L$100).  The fabric has a delicate crosshatch texture, and meriwell mentioned that he left off the side seam because he preferred the softer, casual feel that provided.  Three styles are included: belted, unbelted, and tapered at the ankle for wear with sculpted cuffs. Review: Styria by VincentTalent Maximus

black_city_sepulture_full.jpgAt some of his club gigs lately, my friend Kaj has been wearing some intriguing and unfamiliar jeans and shirts–detailed design work, rich colors skewing to the dark side, goth influences but nothing heavy-handed.  He was kind enough to put me in touch with the designer, VincentTalent Maximus, whose work was new to me.  Vince’s “2di4″ collection so far isn’t extensive, but it’s well executed, beautifully artistic and growing.  We were able to beat our schedules into submission and make time for an inworld chat, so in addition to my usual blather you’ll be hearing from Vincent himself regarding his design work.

“Right now I’m experimenting with a few things,” Vince says.  “I’m really into goth influences (not hard core), spend lots of time listening to dark ambient music, things like the Legendary Pink Dots.  [I] love Tim Burton and the lighter side of dark.  Vampires are great, but they should be sexy!”  I find myself in agreement with the sexy vampires idea.  After all, they’re not just Max Schreck. Get coiffed @ Exile

alex_hair.jpgI love hair.

That’s probably not news to you.  After all, you see me here (and inworld, if you happen to bump into me or, hmm, stalk me down) wearing new or at least different hairstyles with frightening regularity.  Oh, sure, I have a few favorites that I keep going back to (*cough* “Nekoge” *cough*), but who doesn’t?  Hey, I’ve been giving “Poynter” a break lately, so give me some credit there.  ;)

It’s been a few weeks by now, but Kavar Cleanslate recently updated and expanded his collection of men’s hairstyles at Exile.  (The update includes all-new hair textures–more on that later.)  His new styles are available in 30 different shades, packaged in packs of six.  Four of the packs contain natural shades: Blacks, Blondes, Browns and Reds.  (All styles are shown here in Scarlet, one of the Reds.)  The fifth pack is appropriately called Wild Cards as it contains a selection of brighter, less natural colors.  The sixth pack is K’s Choice, and it includes a selection of five from Kavar’s naturals and one of the wilder shades. SHIKI Shapes by Jeckie Hax

I go back and forth on shapes.  Let me tell you what I mean by that.  I like my own shape–I made it myself, and I don’t share it around, so it’s unique to me.  I’ve tweaked it over time, but only a little here and there.  It just feels right to me.  (A) I’m satisfied with it, although sometimes I wonder if I might want to be taller, and (2) I don’t want to have to re-fit all my attachments, so there’s no way I’m making significant changes.  For myself, I don’t see any need for pre-fab shapes.

On the other hand, I look at some of the shapes created by, say, Vasean Talamasca.  The shapes in his collection at Flesh Peddlers are attractive, sexy, even exotic.  I see a lot of guys roaming the grid who, frankly, could use some guidance from somebody with a good eye.  I don’t mean to be judgmental, and I’m naming no names, but if you look like a muscle-bound, top-heavy gorilla on steroids, I might have bumped into you.

Jeckie Hax is partner in crime to Shinichi Mathy (SHIKI Design) and the talent behind SHIKI Shapes.  Jeckie mentions in one of her informational notecards that shiki means “The Four Seasons” in Japanese, and to me this suggests not only the flow of time but the balance inherent in the succession of the seasons.  Perhaps it should come as no surprise that Jeckie’s shapes demonstrate balance, proportion and harmony applied to the human form, or at least its representation in SL. Attitude to spare: New stuff @ Aitui

tokyo_intake_charcoal.jpgLast time I saw Jesseaitui Petion, he was busy getting his new menswear designs set out, arranged to his satisfaction, and properly priced so he could re-open Aitui to the public.  Pretty much every time I’ve seen or talked with him, he’s been pretty mellow, but that night he was a man on a mission.  He said that he’d probably be pulling an all-nighter, and I thought, Wow, I thought we gave all that up when we finished college.  I guess some things don’t change.  He re-opened a few days ago now, so you may have already discovered his new collection, but I wanted to share a few of my favorite items with you here.

I don’t know if Jesse considers his Tokyo Intake Jacket (L$235) the centerpiece of his new collection, but to me it epitomizes the attitude and vibe of his new designs.  The jacket is cut high rather than low on the hip, and it can be worn with or without the untucked printed tee (the tee is not on a separate clothing layer and can’t be worn on its own).  Although I’m wearing one of Jesse’s scarves here–more on that in a moment–the jacket has a sculpted turned-up collar, which Jesse has thoughtfully provided pre-set for two different attachment points (chest and spine).  Several different fabric finishes are available; Charcoal is shown here.  I love love love this jacket and I’m already plotting what other cool tees I can wear with it. Hot town, summer in the city: SHIKI by Shinichi Mathy

bouquet_shirt_blue_denim.jpgDesigner Shinichi Mathy described himself to me as “a newcomer to the SL fahion scene.”  He may have arrived relatively recently, but I hope he sticks around for a while.  His shop SHIKI presents a generous collection of unabashedly colorful, breezy casual designs for men, and a handful of items for women.  I’m pretty sure the shop was redesigned within the last few days–it had a completely different layout when I made a quick last-minute visit last night.  Things do come and go so quickly around here.

Although I’m not featuring them here today, you’ll also find a few decidedly informal suits…perhaps just the thing for a summer garden party or evening cocktail cruise.  The pieces I’m wearing here are just a small selection from Shinichi’s Spring and Summer ‘08 collections. (more…)

Review: Izumiya Outfits

Izumiya Outfit 4Izumiya is a wonderful store that I’ve been meaning to post about but never got around to actually doing it. Till now that is. I mentioned one item in an earlier post, but Izumi Homewood’s work deserve so much more attention than that.

Izumiya consists of mutually complementing halves. The second floor is all freebies and dollarbies. There are accessories, shirts, pants, hats(with hair), a suit, and even poses to be found up there. Creamy Cooljoke, of Free*style, and I coincidentally discovered this store at the same time, and she (unlike me) already covered the freebie side of things, esp. the dollarbie suit. So I’ll focus on the other half, the only slightly more expensive first floor.

Downstairs, prices range between 5L and 70L. Items range from pendants, hats, and hair to belts, bags, jackets. My favorite part, however, are the prepackaged outfits.

Review: Body art by Negko Devinna

humaga_tana.jpgI don’t wear a lot of tattoos in SL. I have none at all in RL, although I have been contemplating one on and off for a while now. But tattoos are yet another area where it’s fun, rewarding, even enlightening to express yourself in SL, even though I might not indulge at all (or yet) in RL. Not just any ink will do. It has to be the right artwork, the right style, the right outer expression of something inner–these make all the difference.

Negko Devinna’s tattoo designs came to my attention by way of a reader recommendation. (Thanks, Viola!) I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I arrived at Negko’s shop–although Viola had mentioned Negko’s blog, I, um, hadn’t actually checked it out yet. :/ As a result, everything was new to me as I stepped into the Great Unknown…which was perhaps a good thing. New: Guywear @ Random Fashions

random_designs_new_shop.jpgNow, I don’t mean “guywear” in the sense that it’s clothing Lloyd Dobler would wear.  (”The world is full of guys.  Don’t be a guy.  Be a man.”)  It’s just that “menswear” seemed somehow not quite right here.  Yes, I’m making it up as I go along.  Anyway, Lloyd might well wear some of this stuff.  I’m thinking by the end of the movie.

I seem to recall that Garbage Prototype had dropped one or two vague hints during the two months or so it took him to redesign and rebuild his shop and completely revamp his clothing and body lines for men and women. I think he just likes to tease like that. This is the kind of thing that just nags away at me from the back of my brain, kind of like my mother, or my conscience if I had one, or the approach of Christmas when I was a kid. I had also visited his website and seen his teaser video, so I knew that interesting things were afoot at the Circle-K.  When he finally said, “Okay, I’m not ready to open yet, but come and take a look if you want to!”–I most definitely wanted to.

I honestly don’t know what my expectations were. I didn’t expect the shop’s casually elegant atmosphere to so slyly reflect Garbage’s creative approach. I know that I was surprised by some of the designs–wow, Garbage did a suit?–and impressed by the range of items and choice of colors. As a collection it felt focused, consistent, and very much an expression of a designer’s vision. I couldn’t wait to pick his brain. (more…)

Review: Kalico Kreations by Kenny Sleeper

welcome_sign.jpg“They say the city of Kalico was once an industrial hub, where most people in the country congregated, worked, and lived.  I, personally, find that extremely damn hard to believe anyone came to this city because they wanted to.  They came because they had to.  They came because everything was here.  Everywhere else had nothing!  Nothing at all!  It’s like someone decided to slap every technological, social, and business aspect of living into one giant concrete hell.  We don’t know much about what life was like before ‘it’ happened, but we definitely know what ‘it’ is.  Everyone does.  It’s the stuff of stories that parents would tell their little kittens so that they would sleep at night.  But ‘it’ definitely happened, and ‘it’ destroyed everything.”  –  So begins the roleplay info notecard for Kenny Sleeper’s new-and-in-progress “Kalico City.”  I was familiar with some of Kenny’s emo/neko/punk designs from his shop Kalico Kreations, and Aidan featured some of his designs in a previous post, but his new venture sounded intriguing (although I find I don’t have enough time to devote the amount that serious RP calls for).  When he mentioned that he had also been creating some new designs so players can trick themselves out in style, it was clear that a visit to Kalico City was called for.  Who knew what grungy, post-apocalyptic wonders would await? Review: Exile by Kavar Cleanslate [2]

This is the second part of a two-part designer review of Kavar Cleanslate’s clothing designs, available at Exile.  You can read the first part here.

london_punk_full.jpgLet’s just pick up where we left off, hey?  Up next is “London Punk”  (L$550), an outfit with a distinctive look that for most needs no further description (but pictures are always helpful, so you’re getting some).  In the box you get two jackets (one with tartan-and-black sleeves, one sleeveless), a barely-there “spidertrap” shirt, red tartan pants with prim side pockets, black facial jewelry, plus collar, belts and various armbands and legbands.  The facial jewelry is linked as a single attachment, so you will need to use Edit Linked Parts to position the various pieces precisely for your avatar–I found this to be fairly simple.  This is another of Kavar’s “deluxe sets,” and in addition to the clothing items you also get his “Revenge” mohawk hair style, shown here in blonde with dark tips.  This style so reminds me of a guy I knew in high school, who used large quantities of egg whites, dyes and bleach to get his hair to look just like this.  I admired his dedication.  Right-click-and-wear is much simpler.  :D (more…)

Review: Exile by Kavar Cleanslate [1]

grease_monkey_full.jpgJust so you’ll know, I do occasionally learn from my own experiences. Although I’m embarking here on an overall designer review (rather than a specific new release), I will endeavor not to make again the tactical error I made when I reviewed Gaia Goodnight’s Darkstar Designs earlier this month, namely the ill-advised decision to include umpteen different outfits and items in a single post. And don’t get it wrong–the temptation to do so again with Kavar Cleanslate’s designs at Exile was very, very strong. However, I’m confident that you are a gentle and patient people, and you’re willing to accept delayed rather than instant gratification. If not, you can just TP over to the shop and check things out for yourself. ;)

Kavar mentioned to me that he’s really into themed outfits and costumes right now, and I want to cover a couple of his new releases for you here. Imagine the possibilities for themed nights at your favorite club! Hmm, sometimes there are cash prizes…I’m just sayin’. (more…)
