Men's Second Style

Back in the 50s, a “rave” was a crazy bohemian party in London full of Soho beatniks. A “raver,” then was a mod party animal. It took another 30 years before the term “rave” began being applied to dance parties with electronic music and light shows. Starting with the European Acid House scene, the rave trend spread around the word, carrying with it techno, PLUR, and a lot of pretty colors.

Now what can I say about James Schwarz that y’all already would know? The man is an artist, whose works grace flickr and will be displayed inworld at the KMADD Gallery very soon. He also is a blogger and writer, having submitted to various in world publications. And, if NWN’s list of top ten hottest avatars of 2008 is any sort of indicator, he seems like quite the catch — though unfortunately for the ladies it seems he was recently claimed. Now in the spirit of all things PLUR and glowstick, James and I each have 3000L to be the best ravers we can be.

James Schwarz – New York New Rave

By day I play the computer keyboard like a piano; dates, serial numbers, descriptions, memorandums, rewind-repeat-rewind. Come 9PM I get off the white shirt, discount tie, cheap slacks and jump into a skittles quicksand…ready to watch my money fly off in exchange for a few hours of escaping or making up for my mundane days.

In this crowded space I find my place surrounded by young, beautiful and not so beautiful strangers, trend whores, art snobs, trust fund hipsters, dirty hustlers, all here for the same reason I am…trying to find, whatever we’re trying to find. I make my way in and people look my way, I knew silver would be a hit.

I stand in the corner listening to the DJ play another remix of the remix of the remix of the song he loves to remix. I am beginning to think he doesn’t play anything else but remixes of that one song, either way nobody cares as they absorb the waves coming out of the speakers. I let the beat in my veins; it takes over me like a trance. Inside this building, the only god is the DJ.

One drink, two drinks, three drinks, lost count. A girl with blue hair was handing out mints so I took around 5 of them but as I grew limp and my vision got blurred I realized that my breath was not getting any fresher and those things weren’t mint. The music gets louder, I’m feeling weightless and free at the same time a rush of different emotions come running over my head. I hear voices, I hear whispers and screams, I hear sirens, I hear myself asking directions…

I can’t see anything but blurred flashes of light and shadows of figures dancing around me. After a few minutes everything stops, all the noises are gone and so is the ground on which I was standing on; I have reached what I have been trying to reach, where I want to be. Feeling my soul away from my body, I swallow this sensation and let it take me where it will take me.
