Most folks tend to associate cowboys with “gunslingers” cuz of Western movies. I’d think that between the cattle drives, working around the ranch, and just tending to cattle a cowboy ends up pretty damn busy. In fact, that may be why Domch Raymaker of SLMen fame couldn’t make it to the throwdown on Friday. But, here he is on Sunday with an awesome entry.

Express Zenovka – Saddle Up Your Horse

When I was a kid, I watched all those Western movies and though it’d be awesome to be a cowboy. Turns out really cowboys aren’t gunslingers.. they’re farm hands. It’s hard work but its honest work. Spend most of my time cleaning up around the ranch. Had to ride into town today to pick up some feed for the cattle.. they’ve been hungry lately. The truck was busted so I had to ride the 10 miles into town on my horse instead.

This old town used to be full of the hustle and bustle of people going out west. But that was one hundred years ago. Now its just is a quiet little town with a general store, a diner, and a Starbucks. Old Man Winnebago at the general store said he’d give me twice the feed for free if I could tame his new rodeo bull so I figured I’d give it a shot. Might win me a few favors from the ladies if I tame the beast.

The bull wasn’t so bad. Was just a big softy. He got a bit too friendly though and tried to eat the back of my jeans. Thats why I’m posing here against the door of the general store trying to look so cool. I wonder if Domch trained the bull to do that…

It’s a sad scene.
This guy riding an electronic steed,
the kind you drop a quarter in
for a 60-second ride.

And while I’m tempted to draw
some correlation between this
and the receding illusion
of the American Dream
I restrain myself.

Because the world needs its dreamers,
its harmless modern day Don Quixotes,
wielding plastic six-shooters
and capgun Ferguson rifles,
riding stationary on aluminum horses,
battling off the enemies of imagination
with youthful enthusiasm.

Where would be without them?
What kind of poetry
would we write?
