It can be challenging to actually (virtually) meet up with someone in SL, even given the convenience of not having to leave my house or even, um, get dressed. So many people, so many time zones–it’s not as easy as it looks. I was fortunate enough to connect via IM with Abby Coalcliff earlier this week, and we chatted about her new fantasy menswear release at Analise.
Abby: My sister [Talyn Barrett] is the main designer of Analise. I usually sell women’s casual wear, and now I’m entering men’s fantasy. I know it’s a bit silly but it’s fun to do something a bit different sometimes.
Ryan: I think SL should be fun–which to me means getting to do things I wouldn’t or couldn’t in RL.
Abby: Oh, I totally understand! I’m currently trying to get out of my RL box.
Ryan: More of us should do that more often.
Abby: [If you] get any silly men’s clothing ideas, send them my way!

Cattivo got a new (and bigger) store at Second Guy Clothiers earlier this week. To celebrate that Lissa made her new outfit available in that store only for a week. The outfit, called The Casual Sophisticate, is supposed to be the start of her spring collection and will be available in all her stores once the week is over.
The outfit comes with a dark red V-neck t-shirt, a charcoal unbuttoned dress shirt in two styles, striped khaki corduroys, and a pair of Lissa’s Oxford shoes in chocolate. Prims are included for the pant cuffs and the cuffs on the shirt with rolled up sleeves. Since they’re all single prim items, they’re easy to resize and reshape to fit you.

It has been with some (not insignificant) jealousy that I have followed the coverage, by other contributors to this blog, of certain elegantly gothic designs by Raven Pennyfeather. When I saw her new release, “Eminence,” I made an executive decision: it was my turn. It seemed only fair. Perhaps it goes without saying that such a task should not be undertaken lightly, but just in case it doesn’t–I say so now with all sincerity. This is a more than ambitious design effort on Raven’s part, and I think she succeeds admirably. The challenge I face is that of presenting her work here and making sure that it looks as wonderfully dramatic to you as it did to me. All in all, it’s not a bad problem to have.

If you’re one of the many people who have been looking for something slightly stronger than off-the-rack reading glasses, but slightly less than a full-spec. iota-class blast helmet, well, my friends, Hern Worsley may have just what you’re looking for. I’m speaking of the AVZ Vision Enhancement unit, 250 lindens’ worth of high tech goodness, available at your helpful AVZ retailer today . The trapazoidal lenses look black in most lights, but are actually highly polished metal and reflect light at certain angles. The top sliver of each lens pulses whenever you’re wearing the unit, in a colour that you can select with an oral command like “/88 trim gold”. (more…)

Although it’s pissing down rain today for me in RL, luckily I have the escape of SL, the virtual “endless summer,” if that’s what I’m in the mood for. To accommodate my need for escapism, Tesla Miles was kind enough to release her new “Enchant” sunglasses this week at TESLA. I’ve tried out some other sculptie glasses, but these are the first I’ve really liked, and I think they’re well worth the brief wait while the sculpted prims assume their final shape. They’re billed as unisex, and although I don’t have a female alt to try them on, the clean, classic design looks as though it would indeed work equally well for the ladies. As for me, these were exactly what I needed for my shift at the lifeguard station. Fortunately there was a steady supply of drinks decorated with little paper umbrellas. (more…)

If you remember the 1980’s movie “The Abyss,” in which a group of explorers discover intelligent life at the depths of the ocean, you will understand why my first visit to the clothing store Lookr was, to say the least, a little eerie. The clothing store is just below the surface of the water and is enveloped by the darkness of the sea. To enter the store you must swim through a fog of cold water and up through a hole in the floor of the complex.

When I visited SOREAL in the past days, I already got a sneak peak at the upcoming sneaker design. I remember I was quite impressed at first sight already, even if they were still not finished. Now that they’ve been released I’m even more impressed.
The sneakers share both characteristics that already made me fall in love with the jackets and sunglasses. The first is the exquisite use of sculpted prims to make the shape look as realistic as possible. The second is the scripting that’s been added to make the sneakers as easy to use as is possible.

My home sim hates me. I don’t mean the estate region I live in; I mean the simulator hardware that runs it. I think it really hates me, and I’m pretty sure it’s because of the high-prim-count accessories I love so much. Sometimes I think I can feel it chug and grind as I click to put on a 200-prim hairstyle. It’s a terrible thing to be so vain. I don’t blame the designers–this failing is all mine, and I take full responsibility. After all, they only create their primtastic masterpieces; I decide on my own to wear them, nobody holds a scripted gun to my virtual head. That said, some of the “worst offenders” (in a good way) in my inventory are jewelry and accessories by Yukirei Greene. Even her apparently simple designs tend to be highly complex upon close inspection: chains are made of dozens if not hundreds of minuscule prim links; what might be highly detailed 2-D textures turn out to be “inlays” of tiny prims. You get the idea. (more…)

I’ve written reviews of coats and jackets that have lots of prim attachments with high-tech gizmos or buckles. But mirai Jun’s creations for Cubic Effect are remarkable for their use of organically-shaped sculpted prims. And these aren’t exactly attachments or ornaments, but rather the attachments are the coat or jacket, as with that Soreal sporty jacket reviewed by Daman a few days ago. You may have some hair that’s similar… where a hair ‘garment’ lays down some basic colour on your scalp in strategic locations and then a prim attachment forms the main part of the hair. These jackets and coats are a little bit like that.
My favourite is the military jacket. Look at that collar, lazily flapping back from that wide open neck. Wonderful! It’s an attachment to the spine and provides some of the shape of the coat’s back as well as the collar. There’s also a sculpty attachment to your pelvis that provides the skirt. If you’re ‘blessed’ with a slow enough computer or internet connection, you’ll be able to see it ‘bloom’ in that way sculpted prims have of first rezzing as a little lump and then unfolding themselves into their proper shape. Then there are also prim versions of bunched up sleeves. The jacket-layer garment really is only there to lay down a stretch of similar colour to the boring areas. All the pockets and other main features are done with (or on) the prims. (more…)

Are you a lookr? That’s the slogan Lookr is advertised with. If you think yes is the right answer, then you should definitely teleport by the store sometime.
Lookr sells both men’s and women’s outfits, but most noticeably also makes custom branded items. These items are paid once, by the brandowner, and then handed away for free to the citizens of Second Life.
When it comes to the unbranded stock, Lookr doesn’t have a huge assortment yet. There is some choice already though. Currently available in the men’s corner of the store are sweaters, jeans, tee shirts and hoodies.

Superior, varied period clothing has historically been found in Caledon, and the quality has continually been impressive. Classic menswear, however, was never in great supply. In recent months, however, Mako Magellan has been designing and offering classic men’s clothing with increasing frequency, the quality of which is as fine as anything to be found in the high end boutiques or men’s malls.
Sunday, Magellan added no less than eight new shoe offerings (available at Mako Magellan and House of Magellan, L$300 per pair) to his already prodigious stock of fine menswear, Victoriana and Nipponaphiliac accoutrements. Based off the same general architecture, taken together they offer the devotee a variety of intriguing options - exotic leathers and colors that lend any suit a tasteful insouciance that’s more rake than ‘rariman.

Why does the environment in which I shop have such a huge impact on my initial reaction to the clothes? Is it because I want my image to reflect a lifestyle or a culture of handsome beauty and high fashion? If the setting reflects this, then I feel the essence of what I really desire when I place a nice sweater over my head or slip on a trendy pair of jeans. I become the style, I become the fashion.
When I rez into the Shopping Street of Muism, I feel an eclectic sense of style. From the music which, in my limited knowledge describe as a blend of Jazz, Folk and Reggae, to the glare of the lights in the shop windows; I feel as if I have entered a heavenly after life. The Irony? The Muism is a Korean Shamanism drawing its belief from a blend of Buddhism and Taoism. This place draws me in and I feel the spirits of high fashion. (more…)

The first thing I want you to know is that I have manfully resisted the temptation to shout, “Extra, extra, read all about it!” Except now I’ve gone and said it anyway. My apologies; apparently you’re just going to have to live with me. The second thing I want you to know is that I can’t begin to imagine where Shai gets her ideas and inspirations for her new clothing designs. In this case, one hopes it wasn’t from repeated rentals of “Newsies,” and if it was, one hopes further that this is because she’s got a thing for musicals, or Christian Bale, or whatever, and not because of its status as a modern classic, because it’s…kind of not. (Flawed as it is, I think “Swing Kids” is arguably somewhat better. Yes, I see a lot of crap movies.) Shai’s new Newsboy Outfits defy easy categorization and immediate understanding of the Why behind the What. This in no way keeps them from being a lot of fun. (more…)

Just out at Moonshine by designer Shelly Toonie are these comfortable Men’s Thermal Shirts. They’re completely casual, of course, but a step above a lazy Saturday morning. With their muted organic colors and detailed artwork, these are perfectly appropriate for a (somewhat) dressy Friday evening, out with friends at your favorite local watering hole.
These finely-ribbed thermals come in five different designs: Cross (at right), 28 at left), Native, Dragon and Skull (apologies to Mr. Oh). The fabric color is slightly different for the various designs, running from slate-blue to charcoal and even a deep, dusty maroon. Detailing in the fabric texture gives them a pleasantly rumpled look at waist and elbows, but overal the look is appropriately smooth and sleek, not disheveled like you slept in them and just rolled out of bed.
Provided on the jacket layer only, so wear them untucked or not at all. Attractively priced at L$75 each. (more…)

One of my self-imposed rules was I would never buy anything with a skull on it. I guess such rules are made to be broken. Risey Arai signed that rule’s death warrant by creating the some of the best leather jackets on Second Life. I’m not a big leather jacket fan and until this week, I felt pretty certain that Nihil Graves’s Tiger Tank jacket was the only leather jacket I’d ever need. Well, this week I bought four leather jackets. And two of them feature skulls prominently. But, oh my, they’re worth breaking a few rules for when you look at the details.
I bought two versions of the Rider’s Jacket. The jackets are primarily black leather, but the top of the chest, back, shoulders and sleeves feature a panel of colour. Three of them are rich colours: blue, purple and red, and the other three are more muted: a drab green, grey and brown. On to these coloured panels, front and back, is printed the aforementioned skull design, somewhat faintly as if it’s wearing off. There is also writing, but it’s hard to make out. The brand name Sey is there, with bunches of numbers and then the sim location of the main store, Honmoku. The leather is nicely rippled with the attendent highlights and shadows and the coloured panel has a marbled-effect texture. In extreme close-ups, the resolution is lower than you’d like, but it only really shows on the zip running down the front of the jacket. It’s not a big problem, though, there’s a lot of other stuff to look at. (more…)

“Master D’Orsay, the time for delivering has long since past.” D’Orsay’s valet AO’d something of his own creation, wherein he tapped the side of his leg impatiently with his left hand while raising one Spocklike eyebrow. It was a deft piece of script, designed to indicate exasperation, cheek and no small measure of the insolence that invariably comes with familiarity. “We are expected.”
“I am aware, Tiro,” D’Orsay acknowledged with his usual equanimity. The fact was, the drafts the Lady Astarte has commissioned of him were perhaps half complete, and his valet Tiro called him now to an appointment for which he was more than a little underprepared. Tiro’s impatience was just; and their conversation was holed with the vacuum-bell pauses indicative of one who is doing some work offline and ALT-Tab’ing back and forth between World and Word. D’Orsay was, rather guiltily, engaging his deadline pace.

After sipping on an extra dry martini I decided it was time to shop at one of the hottest avenues in Second Life and review the new Male Skins by Thora Charron of Minnu Model Skins. Entering into a glamorous world in style being my main priority, I quickly swallowed down the tasty olive, raced up a flight of stairs throwing on my parachute and jumping off the roof of The High Club, an exclusive and prestigious venue owned by sister team Minnu Palen and Thora Charron.
During my descent it was hard not to notice the crowds of beautiful people wandering below in and out of designer shops. After landing and gathering in my parachute I noticed it was not the clothes that made these fashionites at street level so beautiful, it was the skin giving them all a handsome glow. (more…)

A few months ago I had the pleasure of meeting Kwamey Pinion at Booperfunk Island, probably the biggest store in Second Life dealing in dreadlocks, afros and other African ethnic hairstyles. Back then he had released his first hairstyle, a rasta bun, which I sadly didn’t buy. Then, last week a reader contacted us to tell us of an interesting store he found. Heading over there I noticed that the person running the store was the same I met earlier.
Currently, Soreal doesn’t have a huge gamma yet. In fact, they only sell 2 items as of yet: a sports jacket and a pair of sunglasses. His first shoes are under construction and I was already shown a work in progress version of them inworld. Which was enough to convince me to save up some more money for their release. (more…)

It’s very much with mixed feelings that I share the following sale announcement.
Beginning at 9:00 a.m. SL Time on Friday, 11 January 2008, all items created by Ginny Talamasca, Katterina Dagostino and Devyn Carmichael went on final sale for L$100 each. Permissions for all items are now Modify / No Copy / Transfer. All items will be permanently retired at the conclusion of the sale, which will run for approximately one month, possibly longer if demand permits. (Details are according to entries on the Last Call website.)
Chances are you have heard about the sudden and unexpected passing in late 2007 of one of the two partners who together were Ginny Talamasca. (The formal announcement can be found here.) I don’t think it’s too great an exaggeration to use the phrase “end of an era” in attempting to describe what this means to the SL fashion world. Ginny’s designs for women (those gowns!) were beautiful and distinctive. The clothing lines for men were fascinating, striking and sometimes controversial. It seems difficult to overstate the the importance of Ginny’s contributions.
I claim no special relationship with Ginny, in fact I met him only once, when I chatted with Devyn for about an hour for an interview. What I remember most about our conversation was how passionate he was about the work, how invested in the creative process, and how much fun he was having, even in the midst of the craziness that was the Last Call grand opening. It seems appropriate here to remember, appreciate and celebrate Ginny’s amazing clothing designs. Whether or not you loved or wore all or any, you had to admire not only the items themselves but the care and passion that went into their creation. (more…)

Sometimes, I look at a new item, created with love and care by a gifted and talented designer, and it’s a moment of bliss. Think of the exquisite detailing in shoes by Eponymous Trenchmouth, the velvety flow and fall of fabric in clothing by Shai Delacroix, the classic lines of a suit by Blaze Columbia. This is rarefied company indeed, but the new “Seamaster” watch by Aveline Stein earns its place honestly and fits in beautifully.
The Seamaster is meticulously crafted and constructed (171 detailed prims), and according to Aveline all textures were handmade in Photoshop. In addition to showing the time (a must for me–sorry, I’m picky that way), the Seamaster features a working date window that adjusts correctly based on the selected timezone setting. The list of additional features is lengthy, so I’ll mention just a few of the standouts. An beep sounds the hour; you can adjust the sound volume or disable it entirely if you prefer. A new “look at” animation makes your avatar look at the watch every hour or two, and can also be triggered as desired from the menu. Two tasteful “bling” modes are provided, which you can use if you like, but the default bling setting is thoughtfully set to off. (more…)

In Second Life we have the opportunity to express ourselves, via our avatars, in ways that may not be easily accessible to us or even possible in real life. Designer clothing may be daily wear for us in SL, while in real life it’s a luxury that may or may not be possible for us. Changing our skins and hair, though, is a different story—neither quick nor easy in real life, but a matter of a few simple clicks in SL. This issue’s theme is “The Body,” and in this column I want to share with you designs by a few of my favorite skin and hair designers–some new, some old favorites, some you might not have heard of, but I think all are doing great work.
One of my favorite skins in every aspect is “Antonio,” by Funk Schnook. When checking out a skin, I find that I always look first at the face, and I love the way Antonio’s feature detailing (including all the facial hair choices, which are very well done) works on my avatar. Two levels of muscle definition are available, and I remember Funk being a little surprised that he felt the skin worked well on my slim shape, as he had designed it with more “built” shapes in mind. Here you see the less-defined in the Pale skin tone, with the Stubble with Soul Patch facial hair option. L$1850 for a single skin, or L$4500 for a four-pack; demos available in the store. Available in four tintable skin tones and a variety of facial hair and makeup options at FNKY! (FNKY Cake 136, 69, 24). (more…)

TheZoo features what look to be Army Surplus outfits created by Froddo Beck. The one that first caught my eye is called ‘Sub.’ The texture is more photo than hand-drawn. It’s got some nice detail in the buttons, straps and loops and, in person, a surprisingly convincing rubbery look to it. What really got my attention, though is the prim collar. Rather than the usual section of a tube, this one has a sort of reverse curve at one end, matching the way that the jacket’s neck opening is upright on one side and flopping down on the other. Very clever. It’s also got some nice details on it… the outside surface has some metal loops and a string that fits through it to draw it closed. (more…)
