Last weekend I got a notice from one of the fashion groups I’m in: 4 New Unisex Hoodies. In real life I wear hoodies just about every day, so of course I was interested.
I never heard of Inone Style before, but considering the Second Life age of the designer I think that’s forgiveable. Moth’s profile says he joined Second Life in September 2007. This weekend he released the following 4 hoodies to increase the catalogue of his relatively small but beautiful store: a camo hoodie with Army print, a brown hoodie with skull print, a striped blue hoodie and lastly a checkered grey hoodie.
The hoodies use the jacket layer, and are accompanied by a undershirt. The prim hoods come in two presets: male and female. They’re also modifiably so you can turn them into a perfect fit. The hoodies cost 125 L$ each, a very reasonable price if you ask me. They come as Copy/Modify/No Transfer. (more…)

“I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they’ve always worked for me.”
Every once in a while, I see something in SL that’s so crazy, beautiful, clever, or just plain right that it leaves me laughing and grinning like the World’s Biggest Goof at the magic and wonder of it all. This week that honor goes to the “Fear” and “Loathing” glasses by Fedor McNally, inspired by the personal style of gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson. Now you too can be the King of Gonzo, at least in your own little corner of the metaverse.
Perhaps best known for his contributions to Rolling Stone magazine and his seminal novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Thompson was also the inspiration for the Uncle Duke character in Garry Trudeau’s “Doonesbury.” Thompson once told an interviewer that he would set Trudeau on fire if the two ever met, but in later years said he had made peace with his comic-strip persona. In the weeks following Thompson’s death, Uncle Duke mourned the loss of his “inspiration” and experienced a variety of “Fear-and-Loathing”-style hallucinatory transformations. It seemed a fitting tribute. (more…)

Hello all, my name is Daman Tenk, and this will be my first Second Life fashion review. As my first review pick I chose a set called Army Tank Boy, by June Dion of Bare Rose. Just in case you never heard of it before, Bare Rose is a store that offers clothing for both men and women, divided in many categories. Most outfits are for sale at very reasonable prices, especially considering the quality of June’s work.
This outfit is available in the men’s casual section for 130 L$ and comes with pants, skirt layer belts, three jacket layer tank tops, one shirt layer tank top, several prim pockets, and a bullet necklace for the finishing touch. The outfit is set as modify/no copy/transfer. (more…)

Join me in welcoming Daman Tenk as a new contributor to the blog. When I sat down to chat with Daman prior to dragging bringing him on board, I asked him what interested about writing about men’s SL fashion. I’m curious like that. His reponse:
“I’ve been reading the blogs around SL topics for a long time now, and playing SL for a while also. SL is so diverse–name any alternative lifestyle, and you’ll have people in SL practicing it. And not just lifestyles, just about anything.” Daman plans to bring some of this diversity to our attention through his style posts here.
Daman’s personal style? “Usually I stick to stuff in the style of places like FORM, GearShift, Brutal Gear, BroGear. I have clothes of about any style. Rough casual just fits me best, I think.”
Daman’s first post is ready to go and will be up shortly.
Welome, Daman!

Global Warming is, by all reckoning, here to stay. Polar bears running across cocktailing ice, Polynesians aboard outriggers besaddled with backpacks and lunchpails, grasshoppers growing large, learning Missourah-speak and taking jobs in the ethanol and methamphetamine industries–truly, it contains the seeds of planetary catastrophe. And yet… if one looks, the silver lining is there. Moscow eschews the thwarting snow for fields of lush grain. Canada’s warm denizens and chill winds welcome a monied immigrant class from the south and finally put the Northwest Territories to use as a grand vacationland. The Sahara becomes a sea of glass. So why not light gray for fall suiting? It’s been many a year since anyone paid mind to them that wear white after Labor Day, and stripes and stripes have lived together comfortably for years thanks to Etro and Cannon. When it’s 70 in November, a man’s tweed hangs on him like a Neanderthal’s furs–he needs something with a bit less mass. (more…)

Wow, but last week turned into a total slackfest on my part, at least as far as SL goes. I claim invasion by family as the primary cause. I hope nobody thought I had been abducted by aliens. The good news is, I’m still here; the bad news is, I can’t promise there won’t be further slackery over the upcoming Christmas holidays. We’ll all just have to suck it up and deal.
An unfortunate side effect of such thorough takeover by RL commitments is the regrettable languishing of certain new items in my inventory, items that when guiltily rediscovered later aren’t quite so new any more. Ah, well–screw it, let’s move on. If you’re familiar with Zabitan Assia’s clothing designs at FORM, the clear anime, manga and tokusatsu influences of his new men’s hair styles, called “Outcast” and “Yaguruma,” will most likely come as no surprise. Ewing Fashion Agency and OnRez Launch Fashion Design Awards in Second Life
Second Life, November 19, 2007: Today Ewing Fashion Agency (”EFA”) and OnRez announced the creation of the Ewing Design Awards in Second Life. With the Ewing Design Awards, EFA and OnRez are creating a global online contest that will unite the entire Second Life community in a celebration of the best that Second Life fashion has to offer.
Ewing Fashion Agency Chief Executive Officer Una Ewing said, “The Ewing Fashion Agency (EFA) has been in operation for five months and in that time, we have witnessed numerous contests and competitions geared towards models, but never anything concrete for the people who actually toil and sweat to create the beautiful fashions that we enjoy wearing. The Ewing Design Awards gives the Second Life community the opportunity to reward the creativity and innovation of the fashion content creators in Second Life.” (more…)

Sculpties abound in this pair of outfits designed by June Dion for Bare Rose. A casualty of my break, these outfits don’t really count as new anymore, but look at the pictures. They deserve coverage.
I was unimpressed with the first sculptie attachments to clothing. Bell sleeves, flared cuffs– what could sculpties do for fashion that couldn’t be accomplished with regular prims? Well, June showed me. In this first outfit, Man in Black, the hood comes in both regular and neko, the shape suggesting cat ears beneath. It’s a look that’s not replicable with any method other than sculpties. Maybe there’s something to these prims after all.

CSI is for sissies. Here is the ruthless and inscrutable Mr. Oh on the trail of a vicious cereal killer, hunting him down with my “Heppoko” water pistol at the ready. I’m wearing “Hunters: Refined,” designed by Eternalynn Calliope, whose company is called UFonly, which stands not for Unidentified Flying Object, but for Upload Fee Only. For a mere 50L$, you get trousers, shirt ‘n’ tie on shirt layer, jacket, lower jacket “skirt” and stand-up prim collar. Besides the price, the attraction is that this is pure manga abstractions of clothes, cut directly from the comic or from a watercolour wash.

When I was growing up, my mother always told me that there’s a difference between being a man and being a gentleman. As with so many things my mother told me, I’ve learned over time that this is true. I think it’s safe to say that this rule applies equally in Second Life. What makes one a gentleman? The term is usually associated today with a certain propriety and courtesy in one’s conduct, but historically also had connotations of belonging to a good family and perhaps even having the right connections. While I can’t help you with your manners or breeding, I can suggest some clothing and accessories without which no gentleman should venture into polite society. Feel free to take these necessarily specific recommendations and implement them more generally in your own gentlemanly pursuits.

This is Gaku-Gen by Orange Meili of Discord. The white version in particular whispers “simplicity,” albeit intelligently decorated. The stylized tribal/flame design in contrasting colour is avoids cliche with its restraint and asymmetry, especially on the trousers. There’s something anime about the exaggerated flare of the trousers and length of the jacket/robe. The robe bottom is a skirt-layer garment rather than a prim attachment, so strike a kung-fu pose and the design will stretch like it’s printed on a rubber band. Somehow I find this adds to, rather than subtracts from, the anime feel of the outfit.

The tattoos I wear tend to be rather discreet and on the small side, but there’s some really beautiful work being done by a variety of artists in larger sleeve, vest, and full-body styles. I’m a big fan of Zabitan Assia’s “Henkei” tattoo series, and Truth Hawks has some beautiful designs in his store as well. Edward Palace and his shop Slinked Tattoos were new to me, though, so when he recently invited me to check out his tattoo designs, I put a visit to his shop on my schedule. I think it was well worth my time, and I hope you agree.
The “Aztec Half Sleeves” tattoo (L$200) shown here is drawn in deep black, with a repeating motif of round designs reminiscent of depictions of the Aztec calendar. The detailed sleeves connect smoothly to the chest/back yoke, which rises high enough at the neck to form a collar. (more…)

When I arrived at Posy Trudeau’s newly built, in fact at the time still-in-progress shop “Flesh Peddlers,” she was lounging before a roaring fire on a chaise covered in velvet upholstery and dressed as if to double for Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft, the Tomb Raider herself. When I complimented her on her ensemble—it seemed the gentlemanly thing to do—she laughed and said, “It’s all in my ‘to organize’ folder.” Posy and I have sympathized and empathized with each other in the past over our respective inventory management issues, so I understood immediately and completely. We’re not always dressed to impress; often we’re just wearing whatever’s handy. Posy manages to pull this off quite well, whereas I tend to look like I’m in some limbo state between two distinctly different outfits. “Flesh Peddlers” is a new joint venture of Posy and Vasean Talamasca. Posy has been working for the past few months on her new “Jack” and “Jill” male and female skins and will be creating some female shapes as well, while Vasean has designed the male shapes. Unfortunately Vasean and I weren’t able to meet before he left on a holiday trip, but we plan to get together for a chat once he’s back home. (more…)

When Kandi Babe suggested we go on a cruise, well, I said, a cruise? In SL? Is there such a thing? Well, she just whipped out these brochures with this huge ship, a ship like I’ve never seen before. So, I thought, ok, a cruise might be nice. I mean, all this modeling work is hard you know. It would be nice to have a vacation you know. So, we signed up for a week and rented a cabin on the aftdeck and took a transport to the ship. And I must say, the brochures don’t do it justice! It’s amazing.
So ok, it’s the first day of the cruise and Kandi Baby pulls out these tennis outfits she’s packed. We need to do some sports, she says, and tennis is a good one to learn. So ok, I put on the outfit she handed me, and it’s a nice blue tennis outfit fit for a Wimbledon champ! A white and blue outfit with a tinge of light green, the blue running off the shoulders and a green swipe down the midriff on the shirt and the blue pants striped with the same green on the side. So, ok, maybe tennis would be a good sport to take up! It’s fairly early, Kandi Babe just likes to get up with the birds, and so not a lot of people are stirring yet. So we head out on deck, all decked out if you will with our tennis outfits and rackets, and Kandi Babe knows she’s seen a tennis court on the ship. Well, we headed out to the deck and started looking for the tennis court. (more…)

Here’s a piece I love, a stereotypical Japanese work cover-all, apparently called a Tunagi. Your typical westerner making work-clothes wouldn’t be able to resist grunging it up with grease and sweat and so on. This one is shiny and spotless. You have to love it — it’s so ordinary and yet so illustrative of the difference between our cultures. And so unfashionable, it’s cult fashionable. You can see Yoshimi Zabelin’s talent in the shading and shadows; this is no amateur production. It comes in three different colours, but the orange is probably the most … industrial. Each color is — get this — 5L$. No, there’s no discount available for the fatpack. The broom is free at any number of campsites, I’m wearing a generic t-shirt underneath and the customizable name tag is by elka Lehane of [BF] Boing Fromage for 1L$.

It’s not often that I mention jeans and tees here. I don’t have any particular bias against them, at least I don’t think I do–I like to dress down on the weekends as much as the next guy. It’s just that there’s so much else going on that wardrobe staples like jeans and tees sort of fade into the background. I mean, they’ve been done, right? Why re-invent the wheel?
Maybe because any wardrobe staple or even classic (think James Dean in “Rebel Without a Cause” if you’re not sure that the jeans-and-tee look is iconic) can benefit from a fresh take or new interpretation. For me, the Washed Look Jeans (L$120) by designer Tsubasa Ferraris of Endeavor are just such a fresh take. The photoreal textures are clean and clear but don’t just look ironed on, and the button-fly jeans look not just well worn but comfortably broken in, like your favorite jeans in RL. (more…)

So, I was trolling around on the web recently (I get bored at work sometimes, you know how that is) and came across Jesseaitui Petion’s blog, where he’s beginning to share pictures of the progress he’s making on his new skin, called “Reclaim,” currently in the works. I think it’s great when a designer is not only willing to let us in on designs in development but also interested in feedback along the way. Take a look, see what Jesse’s working on, and give him a little encouragement now and then–I think he’ll be glad to hear from you. He says he’s really taking his time, enjoying the work and loving the new skin. His current plan is to have “Reclaim” ready for release in January or February 2008. In the meantime, you can pick up his current skins, due to be discontinued at the end of November, at great sale prices: L$600 for “Premier,” L$900 for “Advance.” (more…)

sachi Vixen of Adam n Eve created one of my favorite themed outfits of the last several months, the Dandy Highwayman. I love its rich color and elaborately detailed design, and oh wow but it’s fun to wear (and show off). Perhaps more subtle and restrained but certainly no less impressive and thoughtfully designed are sachi’s new Hunter Tweeds. If you’ve been trying to find the proper attire for a fox-and-hounds event at your best friend’s country manor, or just weekend outings on horseback with the ladies and gentlemen who lunch, you may need look no further. The herringbone wool fabric is realistically textured, and double black buttons are smart and stylish without calling attention to themselves. The various prim accessories finish the outfit with sophistication and bring it to life. (more…)

I don’t know about where you live, but October was hot where I live. It didn’t feel like autumn in any way. Now that it’s November (either finally or how did that happen so quickly? depending on your perspective), and starting to cool down a bit, it’s time to think about dressing for fall. I love this time of year–digging deep into the dresser’s biggest drawer for sweaters is one of my favorite things.
The new “Autumn” set by swaffette Firely of SF Design is destined to be another of my favorite things this season. If you look good and feel good in earth tones, take a look and give it your serious consideration. Its contrasting textures are beautifully coordinated, and the different clothing items layer flexibly for a variety of looks suitable for different levels of “dressiness.” (more…)

Does just what it says: no more, no less. You’ve gotta love pieces that pull that off, and do so with character. The buttons are eye-catchers without stooping to flashiness, there’s a prim stand-up collar and prim cuffs that add to the attitude, but could hardly be simpler and less gaudy.
But we all have plenty of white shirts. Why buy another? (more…)

The Drifter grabbed the body now laying lifeless on the stone and dragged it around a corner of the building, leaving plain sight. He was breathing heavy, sweating, his eyes darted around searching for movement. His ears were keen, listening for any kind of alarm.
He paused and listened, holding the man by the collar of his jacket. He wiped the sweat from his eyes with a forearm and quieted his breathing, straining for any sound. Nothing. How lucky can you get? he thought. He’d been on the run for months now. This running was differerent - running away instead of to someplace. He squatted down beside the dead body, letting the strength return. Fighting for your life tends to take it out of you, even if it is a short fight. He’d changed his appearance as best he could, cutting his hair, growing some facial stubble. It wasn’t much but at least it was something. He’d even had to lose the clothing he’d spent so much for, bundling them up and throwing them in the river, stealing a pair of rugged farmer pants and an old pullover for a shirt. He’d made his way along the river, breaking into a flat out run for kilos when the baying of the houndslogs started up behind him. Somehow he’d managed to stay ahead and finally lose them. He’d wandered for days, finally catching up a caravan to Penelos, a small village. He’d managed to find some work there, enough to make food money and keep out of sight. So many times he’d see some passer-by gazing at him just a little too long. It kept him awake at night, listening for the inevitable attack. It never came. Maybe he was just paranoid. Glancing down at the body at his feet, he knew he wasn’t too paranoid. (more…)
