Your attention please…

Just wanted to let you know that we will be experiencing, not downtime but a brief freeze on new content while our site is being relocated to a new web host.  There will be no new posts after 7pm SLT (Pacific Time) today until we complete the transition.  I’d advise holding off on comments until after we’re live again, as once the site snapshot is taken no changes or additions made from then on will make the trip.  I’ll post here again to let you know when we’re back on the air and back to normal (whatever that means around here).

Thanks for reading! :D

New: eLite Hair from SkyShop HOC

crow.jpgHow do I look as a blond? A redhead? What if my hair was blue?

When I was rezzed, I chose black for a hair color, because in real life, I’ve never dared to dye my hair black. Quickly, though, I fell into the same trap in my Second Life as in my first– I can’t buy any hair other than black, because I can’t justify the expense of so many hairstyles in all the different colors I’d like to try. I was resigned to being stuck with dark colors forever.

Until Cay Trudeau appeared, and introduced me to her magic eLite hair.

Most good hair is heavy with prims. Cay’s is no exception– the Catalpa style, above, has 91 prims, many of them flexi. In the past, any color change scripting would have to be put into each individual prim, ending in hair that might crash a sim. But according to SkyShop’s info card, “Thanks to LL we have to now use only 1 to 10 scripts per hairdo, instead of the old way of having one script per prim!!” (more…)

New: Bad Boy Scout boots & War-Torn Gear @ [CIVVIES] Wearables

civvies_snapshot_003.jpgOn my honor, I will do my best:
To do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law
To help other people at all times
To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight

Pfft.

When the other boys were concerned with outdoor activities that would develop teamwork and leadership skills while building self-confidence the Bad Boy Scout was only interested in learning to set bigger, more glorious fires, torturing small animals and fooling around with the girl campers on the other side of the lake. His overzealous parents enrolled him in the character-building organization to set him on a path to Harvard or Yale, instead, he emerges as a seasoned firearms expert and gunsmith, knife thrower and arsenist. Living contrary to the image of the wimpy outdoorsy nerd he steps outside of Scout Law and throws his oath, like caution, to the wind.

To compliment the rascal footwear which was made available in early June, Posy Trudeau has issued her War-Torn shirts this week. Both the boots and shirts are available in female versions in-store. (more…)

New: “Luke” male skins @ Adam n Eve

luke_close.jpgFor several months now I’ve been following sachi Vixen’s line of skins for men at Adam n Eve.  This new design, named “Luke,” is her first tintable skin.  She explained in her forum announcement, “I thought it was time I made one to satisfy the customers who have asked me for it.  Luke has a modifyable skintone, you can add freckles, you can be darker, lighter, red, blue or green.”  As you can see in this closeup, I’ve tweaked the appropriate slider to give myself a light scattering of freckles.  ”Luke” is available with blond (shown) or dark brow and facial hair options.  As sachi advised me (she knows my preferences so well), on the blond skin you can also adjust ruddiness and other skin tone values to work well for redheads.  I hadn’t realized how accustomed I was to seeing myself with dark eyebrows, even when I was wearing lighter colored hair. New: Classy sweaters @ SLAB Designs

skoop_purple_tucked.jpgskoop_black_untucked.jpgDesigner Pompo Bombacci of SLAB Designs continues his exploration of refined men’s casual wear with his new ensemble, “sKOOp.”  The look is well dressed but not dressed up, comfortable but not too casual–although even on the “untucked” version the shirt is tucked in, the simple checked shirt is unbuttoned at the top and the tie is loosened for after-hours relaxation.  Each set includes tucked and untucked shirt / tie / sweater combinations, a shirt-layer sweater base for wear under the jacket-layer untucked sweater, and coordinating belted pants in either very dark blue or black, depending on the sweater color.  Permissions are no copy / no mod / transfer, but the pants are provided in four fits: tight, loose, baggy, and extra baggy. New: This Week in Men’s Fashion: June 17 - 23, 2007

0_header_twimf.gif

For those who have been hiding under a rock SL turns 4 years old this week. During all of our careers there have been many ups and downs - n’est-ce pas? - as we all go through our own growing pains in this surreal virtual space.

Within this anniversary week so much is in development or has occurred in the realm of culture relating to the Men’s Second Style blog as well as resident lifestyle in general.

contest_faceofasia07.jpgFace of Asia Model Competition. Anyone who can coax those sliders in appearance mode to create a beautiful or handsome Asian shape is encouraged to enter this cultural modeling contest brought to us by the Asian Designers Summit. Contest guidelines can be found at the Women’s Second Style blog or by visiting the Men’s Second Style office, Casa Del Shai, Earthtones Boutique, Muse or Nicky Ree’s Boutique in-world. Face of Asia is open to all residents. Round 1 submissions close June 27, 2007 at midnight SLT.

freebies_sl4b_nora.jpgNora Body Skins by Sezmra Svarog. Since she teased audiences in mid-April with a sneak peak of her new generation of male skins in development I have been eagerly awaiting the release of her skins. This week, Sezmra displayed a more detailed vision of her skins - each appealing to a different segment of skin consumers: the toned “Hunter” and the svelte “David”. Nora is also offering up some SL4B freebies @ her shop and promises a rehaul of her store and sim.

Second Love Magazine. Tya Fallingbridge and Daphne Molinari announce this week the launch of Second Love Magazine on July 1, 2007. Second Love will be monthly PG publication covering a variety of issues affecting straight and gay residents whether in single, coupled or friendship relationships. The magazine will be accessible in-world and online. The launch party is set for July, 1st @ 7 P.M. SLT game time at Schmooze, Pixel Dreams (12, 146, 21).

As a reminder, if you are aware of any new designers or products that you discover during the week and would like to see included in this segment please look me up and IM me in-world.

Review: Eyewear by Fenigan London

bella_shaded.jpgbella_red.jpgI may be woefully behind the times, but I’ve just recently discovered the eyewear creations by designer Fenigan London, of House of London.  The line features highly detailed primwork and dinstinctive styling with influences of Paris and Milan.  A variety of color and tint options are conveniently available for each style via simple touch scripting.  Here you see the “Bella” style, which has low, wide rectagular lenses, rounded top and bottom, thickly framed at the top but otherwise rimless.  A variety of lens tint and frame color options are available for this style; I’m wearing them with black colored frames, at left with dark shaded (not opaque) lenses, at right with the lenses tinted red.  As you can see, the color tints are quite subtle. Review: VR Phlux by Versu Richelieu

leo_shortsleeve.jpgThere’s something about the swing era that continues to fascinate. Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington–the names of the giants are still well known today. The songs and tunes are familiar to virtually everyone: “Begin the Beguine,” “Jumpin’ at the Woodside,” “And the Angels Sing” (I’m partial to Della Reese’s pre-”Touched by an Angel” cover myself). Designer Versu Richelieu of VR Phlux (currently in transition from the original name, VR Designs) has recently taken inspiration from the era and created several new outfits with vintage styling. We hope you enjoy this joint review–I’m covering three outfits, and Cat is reviewing two others. And don’t dwell on the fact that the location for my pictures is entirely period-inappropriate–that was more for fun than anything. ;)

Review: Gutter Boots by GutterBlood Spoonhammer

terminator_boots_copy.jpgThese clothes are good enough to drink in, and so be these boots too. — Twelfth Night, Act 1 Sc. 3

I first found GutterBlood Spoonhammer’s boot collection while exploring the Homicide Designs shop. Now in his own store, amid packing crates and broken concrete walls, GutterBlood has more room to display his line. “I try to make boots that could or look like they have survived war,” he says; the store is an appropriately mangled backdrop for his wares.

The collection encompasses both laced and motorcycle boots. The Terminator Boots, seen right, belong to the second category, with o-rings at the side and thick chunky soles. The metal banding on the top, reminiscent of spacesuit boots, adds a nicely futuristic touch, while the scuffed, worn leather shouts dystopia. (more…)

New: Sculptie menswear @ PixelMen

longsleeve_leaves_brown_distressed.jpgI don’t know how many of you are susceptible to summer colds, but I get them and let me tell you–they are miserable.  I’ve had one for the last week and it’s left me like the walking dead…and that’s with medication.  Sadly one side effect of all this has been some neglect of goings-on here at Men’s Second Style, but never fear–I’m getting back in the saddle.  I’m checking in with some new sculptie-accented items by designer Dolce Blackflag (Nephilaine Protagonist) of PixelMen at PixelDolls.  (I see that Cat also highlighted some other just-out PixelMen designs this weekend, so be sure to check them out too.)  Here you see one of the Longsleeve Tees paired with Strap Pocket Jeans.  Both feature sculpted prim attachments that create the appearance of looser, less rigid cuffs than system clothing otherwise allows–they’re kind of “slouchie.”  I’ve seen prim cuffs before that gave a crisp, rolled-up look, but this is an interesting innovation that results in a look that’s really comfortable and casual. 0_header_twimf.gif

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there. Hope you enjoyed it and the kids were good to you.

Keeping the intro short, since I want to get this out as soon as possible.

The update I primarily want to bring to your attention is that Jesseaitui Petion of Renown By Aitui has added The 6 colours to several of his hairstyles. The previously released cuts which were exclusively in black are now being sold in ash blond, golden brown, brown, strawberry blond, red and black. “Convincing”, “Frontal Shag” and “Sway” have currently been revised with the new textures with the other styles to follow. He applies the colours to a new style.

Auction to benefit SLRFL - Civvies

civvies_auction.jpgOur second menswear auction to benefit  SLRFL features the following selection of designs by Posy Trudeau of Civvies: Road Agent Coat in black; Worn-In Workboots; Boxers in six colors; Henleys in three colors; and Uberschmutzy Jeans.  With all this stuff, you can put together a complete outfit (or two), deck yourself out in serious style, and help to kick cancer’s ass while you’re doing it!  All items are transferable, so you can give them away as gifts.  This auction will end at approximately 7:00pm SLT on Saturday, 23 June.  Bid early, bid often!  ;)

Visit the vintage diner-themed Shopaholics For A Cause build (Motorati 205, 133, 23) by Aradia Dielli and Lucian Overlord to check out and bid on the current auction (look for the BidBox toward the front of the diner, near the counter) as well as other men’s and women’s items available for a donation directly to SLRFL!  Details regarding the items included in each auction will be posted on this blog and will also be automatically delivered to you as a notecard at the auction site, so you’ll know exactly what you’re bidding for.  Be sure to step close to the BidBox, so your presence can be detected and the notecard delivered.  Don’t forget to take a look at the outside gas-pump vendors, too–there’s some stuff for guys out there.

This series of benefit auctions will run through the months of June and July, wrapping up before the final Relay event on Saturday, July 28.

New: “Justin” hat @ Gracile

justin_hat.jpgNew from designer Patrice Fierrens of Gracile is the “Justin” hat.  (In case you’re wondering, it is indeed named after that Justin.)  This is the first sculptie hat I’ve tried on, and to me it’s a one-prim wonder.  Its simple grey texture has a richer, deeper sheen than I would expect from a classic felt hat, perhaps more like a slightly rough satin.  The notched top, deep black band and narrow brim make for one snappy hat, equally perfect for the sharp-dressed man and the unisexy lady.  (Was “Annie Hall” really thirty years ago?)  It was a snap to resize and fit properly, and a notecard with fitting instructions is helpfully included, in case this isn’t something you’ve done before.

Available for just L$75 at Gracile (Sunset Commerce 95, 146, 709).

New: Dandy Highwayman @ Adam n Eve

dandy_highwayman_stove.jpgI had been invited to a pirate-themed costume party last weekend, so naturally I found myself out shopping for pirate wear, either as a “pre-fab” outfit or individual pieces I could put together.  I remembered that sachi Vixen had a pirate costume in her clothing section at Adam n Eve, so that was one of my early stops.  This worked out perfectly as I had been hoping to find something a little less classic or traditional than the red coat, black tricorner hat, eye patch kind of pirate.  Although the pirate costume I remembered was still available, I also found sachi’s new “Dandy Highwayman” outfit.  ”Hmm,” I thought, “a highwayman is kind of like a land pirate.  Either way, he’s taking your gold, yarrr!”  I agonized for several minutes over what color to choose, decided on blue, clicked to buy and headed home, mission accomplished.  I realized belatedly that my choice of a highwayman rather than a sea pirate costume meant no saying “Yarrr!”  I ended up saying it anyway, but I did try to keep it to a minimum.  ;) (more…)

New: Philotic Energy by Aemilia Case

philoticenergy_snapshot_002.jpgOne of the benefits of writing for this blog is meeting various content creators doing interesting things. Unlike real life where you have a team that develops products that have been filtered by months of research and development, test marketing and Director or Vice President approval, in SL product releases tend to be the initiative of an individual who creates, markets and maintains their brand(s) via the power of one.

As someone who follows in-world retail trends I love to stumble across new designers putting their own spin on merchandising. It’s the thrill of coolhunting coupled with remotely sharing in the success of one’s favourite creators. (more…)

New: Young Gotti skins @ Made Men

young_gotti_velvet_rope2.jpgIf you’re familiar with designer Rockwell Maltz’s line of skins at Made Men, you may already be saying, “Hey!  That’s not exactly new.”  You would be correct–these skins were released just before my vacation at the beginning of May, and then there were all these other things to cover, and Rockwell completely redesigned his shop…you see how things go.  These new skins are still the most recent addition to his line, and they’re impressive enough that I wanted to be sure to cover them here.  Rockwell calls them ”Young Gotti,” and they are indeed skins for a young man–smooth, muscular and well defined.  They’re for the man who likes to go out, who knows where to find a good time, who knows what he wants out of life, who always has the most beautiful escort on his arm.  They could be for you. New: The Black Parade @ Nocturnal Threads

bp2.jpgWhen I was
A young boy
My father
Took me into the city
To see a marching band…

Only the Way brothers could make a marching band outfit this cool. “The Black Parade,” by of kaia Ennui of Nocturnal Threads, is based on the uniform worn by My Chemical Romance as The Black Parade. The outfit is simple– a shirt and pants, jacket extension on the skirt layer, gloves and prim cuffs. The fabric itself is nearly solid black with little texture, a bold decision that allows greater impact of the stark white accents. Sometimes it’s good, it seems, to avoid a realistic fabric weave in favor of a more dramatic contrast. (more…)

New: Freebie tee @ Bossa Nova

mind_the_lag.jpgI have to say, the recent complete and total borking of inworld Search has left me somewhat high and dry.  I’m completely lame about making landmarks and keeping them organized and current.  (I’m sure everyone else reading this has their landmarks properly filed and cross-referenced…right?)  This leaves me at something of a loss when I try to find shop locations, either to make purchases or just to confirm pricing and other details.  At times like this, it’s a good thing I have a handful of “backlogged” items for review, because it’s a cinch I’m not buying much new until Search and Map are working again.  :(

Moire Georgette of Bossa Nova comes to our rescue today with her new “Mind the Lag” tee.  If you’ve ever ridden the Tube in London (sadly, I have not), you know Moire’s inspiration for this amusing take on that state of things, peculiar to SL, that afflicts us all.  The pack includes women’s and men’s versions of the tee, in short and long styles, on different clothing layers–undershirt, shirt and jacket, with tuckable length extensions on the underwear layer.  The fabric is nicely textured with realistic but not heavy-handed wrinkles front and back, and the women’s versions (not pictured, ha-ha) feature more pronounced shading appropriate for female avatars.  In a fit of generosity or perhaps craziness, Moire is letting this go for just L$1!  Get yours before she changes her mind.

Available at Bossa Nova (Dos Corazones 79, 122, 25).

New: Tan Skin Line @ Million Dollar Skin Lab

milliondollarskin_snapshot_005.jpgTake a look at the homepage statistics. Though the economic numbers may fluctuate, the number of total residents will continue to climb as SL gains more formal and informal media. Recently we’ve gained exposure by way of a real world syndicated advice columnist counselling an emotionally torn resident, Kit Kat television advertising, and on-screen personality Bruce Willis promoting his upcoming movie (a promotional event which brings its own flurry of outside press). Not to mention all the real life brands and companies that are slowly establishing themselves in their own sims. Lacoste recently held a model competition for residents and Playboy will enter the market with its own bunny shaped island this month.

With the growth of our community come new ideas and more diversity by which residents choose to reflect their SL selves. This population expansion will also challenge creators in terms of connecting with and maintaining their future and existing customer bases. As communities grow people become more isolated and it will increasingly important to keep the lines of communication open in such a climate. The businesses that ultimately last are the ones that keep their ear to the ground, so to speak. Having the skills to add quality content to in-world markets will undoubtedly establish presence and creative prowess. And business-mindedness is needed to effectively improve and expand in a competitive retail climate.

bestman_darkgreen_skinnyjeans_darkwash.jpgbestman_red_close.jpgGarbage Prototype has been mind-bogglingly busy out at Random these last few weeks, first with a series of new hairstyles (read about one here) and now some new casual clothing designs for the guys that are right up my alley.  They seem a natural for putting together as an outfit, and that’s what I’ve done here.  The Best Man vest/tee combo comes in seven colors:  Black, Blue, Dark Brown, Green, Orangeish, Purple and Red.  The vest colors are all muted and subdued rather than bright.  Vest and classic white tee are combined on the same clothing layer, and all seven colors are provided on both the shirt and jacket layers for tucked and untucked wear. New: Military Brat @ DE Designs

tenhut.jpg“Ten-HUT!”

DE Designs’ newest release is Military Brat, a stylish takeoff of camo wear in three colors– “Urban” (blue/gray), “Desert” (tan/olive), and “Recon” (black/gray). Designer DoC Eldritch has created a fine interplay of texture that fits into a coherent whole. The pants are a low-contrast camo design with a coarse mesh weave. The fabric must not hold together very well, as a rip in one thigh is repaired with grommets and lacing, and the other thigh is repaired with a bandanna tied in place. The wrinkles in the pants and bandanna are particularly well done. Another bandanna, riveted in place, patches up rips near the waistband of the pants, and continues around the front to act as a second belt. And on that belt– D-rings! God, I’m a sucker for metal in an outfit. (more…)

New: Casual shoes @ SF Design

terra_sandals_full.jpgToday’s your lucky day–I’ve got not just one but two, count ‘em two new casual footwear styles for you, both from Swaffette Firefly of SF Design.  Here you see the Terra Sandals, a solid interpretation of familiar rubber sole, nylon canvas strap sandals.  I have no idea what high-tech magic goes into building the carbonized rubber soles (or whatever they are) in RL, but the Terra soles look just like ‘em.  They’re thick and a little chunky, with a bit of a lift from toe to heel and an interesting wavy division between the lighter and darker, top and bottom layers of the sole.
