Grand Re-Opening @ TRUTH

truth_snapshot_017.jpgSame great style in a fancy new box.

It’s no secret. For several weeks Truth Hawks has been on the move to redesign the vibe of his branding. According to his philosophy, phase one was the logo change and phase two is the grand redesign of his headquarters. He has made a conscious effort to break away from initial inspirations for TRUTH Designs.

Just over a week ago the guru of casual fashions invited me down into the lush Odessa Luxurious sim to take a sneak peak at his new fashion house, which has been designed in monumental beachfront style by architect Bethany Heart and scripter Echo Seigo of EB Creations who expertly create anything from homes and stores to entire sims.

The build includes a runway stage with a flashing spotlight effect on the entrance curtains, dark mahogany accents and subdued wall texturing with dramatic lighting effects throughout. The composition utilizes clean, simple lines and detailed texturing to create an atmosphere that exudes a sense of luxury closer to the equator. It’s classy yet casual - just like the goods found within. Bethany endeavoured to make Truth’s vision of an edgy, sexy and chic store materialize into an edifice fully deserving of the brand’s existing and future offerings. (more…)

New: Dinjy Jacket @ FORM

dinjy_jacket_white_tank.jpgTrying on a new piece of clothing by Zabitan Assia of FORM is like finding a razor blade in the middle of a dozen roses from your lover–it hurts so good, and you know you should stop, after all there’s blood, but somehow you just don’t want it to end.  But then it does end, and you’re left waiting for your next fix, wondering Should I try cutting myself, or just wait for the next happy accident?  Okay, maybe it’s not exactly like that, but you get the idea.  Zab’s new Dinjy Jacket is all that and more.  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again (in fact, I wrote it on a bathroom wall once): Zab gives good texture.  Never mind how I know; that isn’t important now.  What is important is how this black denim jacket looks like it’s been casually brutalized (somebody likes it rough) until it’s been broken in, broken down, broken into complete submission for your wearing pleasure, if not ecstasy. GearShift auction closes tonight!

Just a quick reminder that the auction of GearShift gear to benefit SLRFL ends tonight at about 8pm SLT, if nothing has gone awry with the timer.  This is a great opportunity to add a nice selection of Donovan Brennen’s design stylings to your wardrobe and support cancer research at the same time!  See this previous post for details, including a live link to the auction site–then go and do your part by bidding generously.  Relay For Life greatly appreciates your support.  :D

New: Jailbird button-down @ Homicide Designs

guilty21.jpgWell, I ain’t here ’cause I drive too fast
And I’m too young to have a criminal past
Some good behavior would be all right
But I don’t seem to qualify, hah
I just stopped for a little fun
But I’m guilty till I’m twenty-one
I guess I’m doing time for being young!

Sometimes prison clothes are cool. Not the orange jumpsuit, or the old black-and-white-striped Hamburglar outfit, but the blue denim work shirt and jeans? Very, very cool. This is the badass type of prison wear, the look that says “Don’t screw with me. I will end you.” (more…)

New: Camo tanks @ Brutal Gear

camo_tank_blue.jpgLately, my heart has gone out to Nex Brannan.  He suffered a computer meltdown and all the drama and fallout that go along with that particular tragedy.  My sympathy was immediate–there but for the grace of God go I–but this quickly transformed to empathy when my own PC crashed and burned.  Apparently the grace of God had failed me this time out.  Fortunately for all of us (and not least of all for himself), Nex has rebuilt, recovered, rebounded and released his first new designs Post-Crash, a set of camo-design tanks in four colors:  blue, green, grey and sand.  The colors are well chosen and allow you to dress with care while coordinating with “regular” wardrobe items, and the camo pattern is clear but subtle, definitely not “in your face.” (more…)

This week has been pure madness. It’s been filled with family, party, headaches and it was all topped off by a wedding. Though, SL fashion was at the back of my mind. The sign of true addiction.

With all that was going on I couldn’t disappoint. With time quickly running out I bring you this week’s goodies.

Review: Hayate’s Hair Lab

kira_side.jpgkira_front.jpgJust this week I was given a landmark  to Hayate’s Hair Lab (H2L), brain-child of designer Hayate Ewing.  (Thanks to Vasean for the tip!)  Hayate is creating some amazing hair designs, and I felt compelled to share a couple with you.  The style you see here is a new design called “Kira.  This is a beautiful, anime-inspired style.  In spite of the clear anime influences, my first thought was, “Oh, it’s very Duran Duran,” and amazingly enough that was the first comment I heard, too.  So it’s not just me! New: Revelation Backyard by Noaru Semyorka

revelation_snapshot_001.jpgJeans. Denims. Dungarees. Whatever you call them, everyone has a pair or two hung up in their closet, folded in their drawer or slung across a chair (maybe even dashed carelessly on the floor). They’re an essential item for the young or old since they’re one of the most versatile, functional and gender friendly articles of clothing ever made. Every type of clothing item and accessory has been presented in denim. Bags, dresses, jackets, overalls, shirts, shorts, skirts and more have all made appearances in the classic blue as well as every alternative wash and tint currently available to mankind. The basic necessity of jeans, their diversity and relatability has motivated many clothing designers in the first and the second life to try their hand at creating denims with a public appeal. It’s understandable. The possibilities are seemingly endless. Lowrise, ultra-lowrise, bootcut, boycut, waistcut, flared leg, straight leg, wide leg, skinny, baggy. The list goes on.

New designer Noaru Semyorka throws his hat into the ring with three sets of distressed denims that consumers can buy in several washes. Says the designer, “SL Fashion is constantly on the move, with new ideas and fresh designs almost every day … People keep inspiring each other and I really like that, even if there was something already made before ‘usually’ every designer’s version is different with a unique approach to it”. Auction to benefit SLRFL - GearShift

gearshift_auction.jpgNo, we’re not auctioning off designers themselves–just their creations!  (We did that already anyway.)  Some of my favorite designers have made donations of items from their menswear collections for auction to benefit SLRFL.  Most of these items will be current and classic designs, but some may be one-of-a-kind creations just for this event.  Details regarding the items included in each auction will be posted here and will also be automatically delivered to you as a notecard at the auction site, so you’ll know exactly what you’re bidding for.  Be sure to step close to the BidBox, so your presence can be detected and the notecard delivered.  Visit the Shopaholics For A Cause build (Motorati 205, 133, 23) to check out the current auction (look for the BidBox toward the front of the diner, near the counter) as well as other men’s and women’s items available for a donation directly to SLRFL!  Be sure to take a look at the outside gas-pump vendors, too–there’s some stuff for guys out there.  Auction instructions are available at the Motorati site, but feel free to IM me if you have any questions.  Better yet, ask your question here in the comments and I’ll respond here as well.  If something isn’t clear, it’s probably not just you, and others will be wondering too.

Our first menswear auction features the following selection of designs by Donovan Brennen of GearShift:  Pheonix Sweater and Polo; Relics Casual Shoes - Futures; Pirate Cap - Natural Hair Color Pack; Patch54 Jeans; and Shadow Godfists.  With all this stuff, you can put together a complete outfit, deck yourself out in serious style, and help to kick cancer’s ass while you’re doing it!  All items are transferable, so you can give them away as gifts.  This auction will end at approximately 8pm SLT next Wednesday, May 30.  Bid early, bid often!  ;)

This series of benefit auctions will run through the months of June and July, wrapping up before the final Relay event on Saturday, July 28.

Review: Lone by LoneWolf Mackenzie

basics_gray_close.jpgEvery once in a while, I try to broaden my horizons a little.  I’ve had my eye on designer LoneWolf Mackenzie of Lone ever since he came to my attention a few weeks ago.  I’ll be the first to observe that LoneWolf’s designs aren’t the kind of thing I wear most often, but I think his style and sensibility are well worth checking out.  I asked LoneWolf about his design influences and mission for his clothing line, and his response was to the point:  “My approach is to make unique, detailed designs for the urban man.”  I like a man who knows what he’s all about.  Judge for yourself. New: Angel of Death @ Goth1c0

cathedral.jpgGoth1c0 is a store close to my heart, since it’s the first modern goth store I found in SL, and it’s still one of my favorites. Keishii Roo’s newest release in menswear is the complete outfit Angel of Death, including pants and shirt laden with buckles, a prim belt with “half-rotted sarong,” and the crowning point, the tattered and pierced flexi-wings.

While I am a huge (HUGE) fan of buckles, the horizontal positioning of the straps and buckles across the torso inevitably mean that they’ll be pulled out of shape on the avatar. Still, the sheer amount of metal in this outfit (rings! studs! pins! BUCKLES!) makes up for that, in my opinion. The red waffle inserts in the pants set off the small criss-crossing leather straps, and the leather has just the right sheen without being super-shiny or blingy. Especially on the butt (not pictured, ahem.) Some people give good butt highlight, and Keishii’s one of them. (more…)

New: Work shirts @ Pushbutton Industries

last_chance_front.jpgThose of you who have been yearning for more men’s wearables from Pushbutton Skolnick–your dreams have come true.  These work shirts aren’t so much new as newish, as they were actually released before I went on vacation…and returned home to a dead PC, grrr.  But I love ‘em, and you should see ‘em, so screw it.  They make me smile.  :)

last_chance_back.jpgFirst of no particular order we have a shirt apparently lifted right out of the Last Chance Garage employee locker, and formerly property of one Elvis.  Fortunately it’s in pristine condition, with no detectable residual odor.  Double patch pockets, unusual square buttons and a subtly nubby fabric texture make for great realism.  The worn, faded artwork on the back adds some extra interest for the wearer as well as others.  You might not want to change your own oil while wearing this shirt, but it’s nice to know that you could. New: This Week in Men’s Fashion: May 13 - 19, 2007

0_header_twimf.gif
I’ll keep this short and sweet. This week marked the appearance of some really fun, satirical and all around distinguished articles on the men’s fashion scene. Being a joker-at-heart, as soon as I saw Gadget Gobo and Caroline Apollo’s comical devices I ran down to their stores to take a peek for myself - laughing all the way. Sometimes we all need a little ludicrously funny distraction for our wardrobes. As always designers for all categories of items put out primo content whether you seek the ludicrous or the distinguished that we just can’t help but share with the masses.

While chasing answers to a reader inquiry I had the great fortune to stumble across a skin which may be something worth investigating for those looking for a non-athletic touch.

Dive in and see if there’s something within that suits your tastes.

New: Spider Bite Suit @ GearShift

gearshift_snapshot_008.jpgIn the midst of struggling against the usual teenage demons of rejection, inadequacy, and loneliness, socially awkward Peter Parker finds himself endowed with extraordinary abilities. Superhuman strength, the capacity to cling to walls, a sixth sense that forewarns him of danger, perfect balance, speed and agility. A web-slinging hero, Spider-Man is poised to face a rogue’s gallery of powerful thieves, gangsters, and megalomaniacs. All this power and responsibility brought by the bite of an irradiated spider.

gearshift_snapshot_010.jpgFollowing the wake of the cascading adventures of Spider-Man 3, GearShift swings into action with a themed ensemble dedicated to the webbed wonder. Unlike the average suit this one isn’t necessarily intended to add to your professional appearance exclusively in the boardroom. The “Spider Bite Suit” aims at netting an audience of savvy urbanites looking for something less corporate with an edgy street wise appeal. Going beyond the usual novelty clothing components, Donovan Brennen has created an entire themed suit that weaves together all the myth, mood, and magic that fans of the comic serials and movie franchise have come to associate with their friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man. Block Party this Saturday!

block_party_5.jpgI hear from Posy that Block Party 5 will be held this Saturday, 12pm - 3pm SLT, at The Block.  The semi-occasional Block Parties are inworld-famous for their wild and crazy decadence and debauchery, so you don’t want to miss this one!  They’ve got a whole sim to crash around in now, so the damage is likely to be severe.  Your roster of hosts will include (but will not be limited to) the usual suspects you see in the stunning mug-shots at left.  Limited edition, Block Party only designs will be available, tunes will be played (Posy says, “Donovan is DJing, and that’s always a treat!”) and, rumor has it, some great freebies may be grabbed.  If the stars are in my favor, there’ll be drinking as well.  Tell all your friends!

Festivities and carnage will commence promptly at noon SLT this Saturday at The Block (The Block 139, 133, 23).  Event posters and landmark dispensers can be found at the Men’s Second Style office (Sheol 248, 4, 552)–just Search inworld for Men’s Second Style or check my profile’s Picks.  See you there!  :D

Review: -[Kalico Kreations]- by Kenny Sleeper

crouch.jpgThe first thing you will learn about me is that I am obsessed with the apocalypse. Give me a mass disaster, burned-out cities, and the straggling remnants of people struggling to rebuild civilization, and I’m good to go. In theory, anyway. I doubt it’s as much fun to live in as to play with.

Postapocalyptic neko-emo-wear isn’t what you’d expect to find in a store called Kalico Kreations, but the collection by Kenny Sleeper is packed with everything you might expect to find in a nuclear-blasted wasteland. I found clothes, scarves, collars, nose spikes, a gas mask, even a jetpack made from an old propeller. Given my lust for all things Road Warrior, it was really difficult to keep from blowing my entire wad. I had L$56 left when I was through. No lie. (more…)

New: Polos and Sweaters @ GearShift

gearshift_snapshot_001.jpgWhen I first entered SL some of the first clothes I bought were from a small store inside the Miau Haus in Yelas. I browsed around while the designer was in-store setting up new vendors. There were some hoodies, a tee and a pair of jeans that caught my eye and I ended up buying them. Some of the best purchases I’ve made in SL. In the following weeks I ended up rotating between these and other items in my meager wardrobe. What continues to appeal to me about the clothes are their finishing details (the hood attachment and neck cinch strings), the sleeve extensions in the glove layer, and lastly - but certainly my favourite - the uneven crosshatch strokes in the base fabric. The slick texturing technique created a visual impact that reminded me of the comic book art I digested in my youth.

As such, it didn’t surprise me to find out that Donovan Brennen of GearShift is a hopeless comic book junkie. And lucky for the SL male population Donovan has super powers of his own - a metahuman ability to turn pixels into sharp urban apparel. (more…)

Welcome, Aidan!

Join me in saying a big hello and welcome to Aidan Recreant!  Aidan has been reading the blog for some little while, making interesting and insightful comments along the way.  He’s joining up now as a columnist with plans to focus on goth, vamp, and other dark and non-mainstream clothing and gear.  Yep, you heard that right–Aidan rushes in where Cat and I fear to tread.  (Interpret that however you will.)  His first post is just about ready and should be published in short order, so be on the lookout.  In the meantime, say hi!  :D

New: This Week in Men’s Fashion: May 6 - 12, 2007

0_header_twimf.gif

Following some constructive and pointed feedback from our valued readers the format of this segment as been slightly adjusted. You are really making me work for this. But I enjoy a good challenge. Items have been arranged in categories and descriptions have been made more concise (3 to 5 short sentences each). Due to time and resource constraints designer-created images have been used in the product highlights. If there are any further comments you may have on the changes please feel free to post.

Is it any wonder that this was also a week that was rife with male fashion content? We’ve got a fairly diverse round-up with amongst the categories in addition to two sales. And of course I felt obligated to write about the quality products I saw and/or tried on.

Review: [The Syndicate] by Jemca Arizona and Tyreak Takashi

syndicate_snapshot_002.jpgCue the voice over:

“And now for something completely different”.

If you’re in the market for a garbage can backpack or a blazing bi-hawk, I have some information that may be of interest to you. It’s my pleasure to introduce readers to [The Syndicate] a little-known shop of quirky curiosities owned and operated by Jemca Arizona and Tyreak Takashi. When the indie shop was first brought to my attention I was immediately impressed by the flawless primwork. Then, I was struck by the concepts behind the products. Jemca describes the store as, “A cross-breed of alternative punkish and, well, the simply unique. We both try to design items that may be inspired by things, but haven’t been done as of yet in SL”.

syndicate_snapshot_007.jpgJemca and Tyreak initially started out as the proprietors of their own individual brands. After becoming friends, involving one another in their respective creative processes and building together the symbiosis warranted a business merger. Jemca’s Alchemy Trading Co. and Tyreak’s Salvage Inc. transformed into [The Syndicate]. [TS]’s inventory is largely comprised of unisex accessories which appeal to alternative tastes. Let’s face it. You’re not going to wear a leopard print studded belt or a bracelet made of bullets unless you have a thirst for the unusual. Some product names are playful and satirical. The “Drop-a-Cop” aviators, “Wingaling” camo military hats, “Diamonds Are Forever” fur trim jacket (above, left) with gem-on-white texturing and the rusted “Screw It” necklace are among the whimsically titled goods. Good news, bad news

So,  the good news first.  I survived my vacation and I’m back home!  :D

Now the bad news.  :(

When I got home, I found to my horror that my PC no longer boots up.  Needless to say, this is doubleplusungood.  I have a crappy laptop for work that I can use for e-mail (and posting if need be), but it won’t run the SL client.  I told you it was crappy.  This means I’m down for the count until I either get my PC running again (hopefully) or buy a new one (only if necessary, meaning it makes financial sense).  I’m dropping it off to be checked out this afternoon, so hopefully I’ll know what’s wrong before the weekend and reach some sort of resolution by early next week.  In the meantime, don’t give up on us!  Cat’s still alive and will be doing his regular thing.  I’ll get back in the swing as quickly as I can.  I’m experiencing withdrawal symptoms already…

New: This Week in Men’s Fashion: April 29 - May 5, 2007

0_header_twimf.gif

I managed to wittle down this week’s bulletin to only four items, which affords me the opportunity to spend a little more time to focus on each. And I’m doing it completely guilt free.

For those who regularly follow the blog this marks the fourth week we’ve put out this weekly wrap-up and we’d appreciate your feedback since we’re doing it for you, kids. Is it working for you? Not working? Are you completely ambivalent or uncaring? We want to know and can handle any criticisms you may have.

While you’re taking some time to mull it over take some time to scan this week’s trendy tidbits.
