Posting on a Sunday again. I might have to make this a part of the usual ritual.
This week some counter culture hair and apparel made their way into the retail market, allowing avies to let down or muss up their hair, salvage stuff from the dirty clothes hamper, and adorn themselves in the non-traditional if they so choose. Not everyone wants to look as though they got lost on their way to a Club Monaco photo shoot. SL designers have been great lately in putting out products for residents who want to highlight their non-standard, unusual or just regular down-to-earth features. Aged skin, thinning hair, shapes with wider waistlines and a host of other items for ordinary people.
I’m feeling a little rant moment coming on. I promise it’ll be short. <start rant> Ours is a world where you can choose to be one of a bajillion different types of fantastical creatures - chibi fox, dragon, jogauni, phoenix, sphinx, etc. - but if you wanted to be a Filipino guy in a traditional barong tagalog or a Polynesian guy in a comfortable lavalava you would be faced with severely limited choices. Am I the only one that thinks that’s a little odd?</end rant>
I look forward to the coming weeks and months where we continue to recognize and reflect our diversity in-world. I hope you do too.

Every once in a while, you see something and think, “I’ve needed that all along–I just didn’t know it!” Â My most recent such experience was with these bowling shoes, just released by designer Eponymous Trenchmouth of Jeepers Creepers. Â Her new Strike! Bowling Shoes come in two color variations, as seen in the accompanying pictures. Â Here you see the “Black and White” version, which is accented by a sharp red stripe. Â Both feature realistic leather texture, bright metal grommets, and flexi red laces. (more…)

When she’s not keeping readers of the Calla blog up-to-date on new product releases, recounting tales of being hit on by customers or describing the quirks of life in SL and the real world, Tigerlily Koi of Calla is quietly glued to a pose stand primping her new hair creations. Koi and her partner-in-crime, Haedon Quine, met while playing The Sims Online. Their gaming interests took them to several other worlds and eventually led to Second Life where they now own a retail sim dedicated to the craft of coiffe.
After participating in a slew of building instruction classes and trying her hand at creating different items, Tigerlily found that she had a strong penchant for hair design, “I spent weeks upon weeks in Teazers classes trying to figure things out. My shoes were horrible. My furniture was mediocre. My jewelery was not great either. But I was getting the concepts. One day in complete frustration, I went to a sandbox and tried hair. It actually came out decent!”. (more…)

I want to let faithful blog readers know that I’ll be away on vacation for the next couple of weeks. This will for the most part be a vacation from SL as well, which means…no review posts from me until I get back home! Actually, if you’re lucky, you might just get one or two from me while I’m gone, depending on how many I have near completion in the pipeline. Also, Cat will be publishing his weekly men’s fashion digest, as usual, and I heard a rumor that Ben might have something for us as well. So please do check in regularly–anything can happen! I’ll be back on 10 May, and at that point things should be more or less “back to normal,” whatever that means around here. Try not to burn the place down while I’m gone!

I know, I know–more hair. Listen, if this style had been out at Hair Fair it would have gone home with me immediately and you’d have seen it in that coverage for sure. Designer Garbage Prototype of Random just released this new men’s hairstyle called “Ryan” (just a coincidence, as far as I know). This is is a longer, somewhat shaggy style with flexi sections that give it greater realism. This is also the first dyeable hair I’ve bought, and just so you’ll be able to derive some benefit from my own tragic experience I’ll confess to you that I managed to screw the whole thing up almost immediately. My first advice to you: There’s an instructional notecard included–read it! And follow the instructions carefully. Before you even start, it’s important to understand that the hair is dyeable one time only via script. This is clearly stated on the first line of the notecard, in all caps no less, and still I managed not to grasp the concept.

Due to the ton of stuff I had to do all through this week I didn’t really get time to publish this segment yesterday in the regular Saturday slot. If anyone noticed I hope all is forgiven. Maybe the quality of the products seen within will help in melting away any animosity being harbored.
Everything happens for a reason and, from my point-of-view, the delay gives me an opportunity to support my Relay for Life team by announcing the recent release of Last Call’s silent auction item - a one-of-a kind gown to benefit cancer research. Additionally, I’ll give you the rundown on other limited editions designed by team members and supporters of the Shopaholics.

For some time now, designer Kasi Tandino has been quietly adding quality men’s items to her line of fashions at Symmetry, which originally featured designs for women only. This week’s new release–the tuxedo you see here–prompted me to get my act together and at long last review her growing collection for men. “Tuxedo Nights” is available in fourteen colors: Mauve, Silver, Pink, Purple, Red, Royal, Cobalt (pictured), Emerald, Gold, Lime, Aqua, Baby Blue, Black and Maroon. The jacket features silk lapels and pocket trim, covered buttons, and a white pocket square. (more…)

Although Cat mentioned these new sneaks by Dragontat Zagato in last week’s new fashion digest, they’re so cool I had to give them some extra play. I’m a total sucker for casual shoes anyway, so DT pretty much had me at hello. The new DMC Cruizers come in a positively ridiculous variety of colors and patterns (only a few are pictured here), so you should have no trouble finding a pair that will perfectly express your inner skaterboy. Go on–you know you want to.

Cat can be a tough act to follow. When a few days ago he showed me some pictures from the sophisticated photo shoot for his review of the new “Antonio” skins from designer Funk Schnook of FNKY!, I thought, “Hmm, these are good.  In fact, they’re so good…that I kind of hate him…just a little…just for a minute.”  Because this is one of those items that neither of us would gracefully concede to the other for review coverage.  Fortunately, we play well together.  My animosity was short-lived, I got over it quickly, I’ve moved on–and I don’t think he even noticed.  ;)
Funk’s new “Antonio” skins comes in three base tones: Pale, Medium, and Tan. Â The skin tone can also be adjusted across a wide range via the Appearance sliders. Â As Funk told me, you can get a fairly light color even wearing the Medium tone skin. Â I am wearing the Pale skin tone in all accompanying pictures, with the color slider set to 25 (the “out of the box” setting is 50, the midpoint). Â In this first picture you see the “Baby Face” (clean shaven) facial hair option. Â Personally and quite subjectively, I think this might be the most attractive face any skin has ever given my avatar. (more…)

If you’ve never heard of or owned any product created by Funk Schnook, creator of FNKY!, please crawl back under your rock and continue to live in your hollow little world bereft of urbanity. I’m certain many friends and loyal customers may have begged the well-rounded designer to expand his brand to include skins. To this reviewer, this transition into skin creation was only natural. It was only a matter of time, really. Funk has won over consumer audiences with his pragmatic, conscientious and polished aesthetic treatments which exude the most ravenous sense of savoir-faire.
FNKY!’s debut skin line serves to bolster quality male skin selections in a market where discerning men tend to be hard-pressed to find variety in quality product. (more…)

Today marks the closing day of Hair Fair and most significant is the association with Bandana Day. Residents are encouraged to take their wigs off and replace them with one of the varying bandana styles, colours and patterns that have been created by the Hair Fair showcase designers. All proceeds from bandana sales go to the Locks of Love children’s charity. Stop by the Hair Fair sims (Hermit Heaven and Prim Paradise) and grab one or more of the 50L bandanas at the three display tables provided.

Okay, so it only took me two days to get into Hair Fair 2007. Â By that I mean that I tried (unsuccessfully) to get in on opening day, April 6, but both sims (it straddles Hermit Heaven and Prim Paradise) were full every time I tried. Â Curses!–foiled again. Â My efforts on April 7 met with marginally greater success; I did manage to arrive on one side or the other, I forget which, but crashed almost immediately while chatting with a friend I had bumped into right outside the main gate. Â When I got back in-world, it was…lagtastic! Â Lagtacular! Â Lagarrific! Â All that and a bag of chips. Â I was finally able to see Hair Fair in all its glory and do some actual shopping late in the evening on April 8. Â I ended up having a lot of fun–there’s something about buying whatever catches your eye that just has that effect. Â The event runs only through this Saturday, April 14, but even if you can’t get there yourself, you can still do some shopping at the designers’ own stores. Â I did take home several new men’s hair styles for myself. Â For your benefit, here are the fruits of my labor. (more…)

It takes something to get me to write about tees. Don’t get me wrong–I’ve posted about some great tees here in the past, and will no doubt do so in the future. I guess I just look for that “something extra,” whatever it may be, that makes them stand out from the crowd. Designer Pushbutton Skolnick of Pushbutton Industries (”Quality Fashions for Post-Apocalyptic Lifestyles”) caught my eye the other day with her new “American Trilogy” set of tees, which features strong, beautiful artwork depicting three giants of American music: Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, and Willie Nelson. You may remember some of Pompo Bombabcci’s casual designs from an earlier post. Now he takes SLAB Designs in a different direction with these comfortable casual-dress outfits. The result is a fine interpretation of what is perhaps the earliest known native attire of the male of the species known as “Young Urban Professional.” For the benefit of those who may have missed the relevant episodes of “Wild Kingdom,” this includes a simple, classic white dress shirt (no tie), khaki trousers, and tweed jacket. As envisioned by Pompo, “YUP” comes with two jacket/shirt combos (one with the shirt tucked, the other untucked), one pair of khakis with leather belt (four different pants fits: Tight, Loose, Baggy, and Extra Baggy), and a shirt-layer item that loosens the fit of the sleeves, to avoid that sprayed-on look. Here I’m wearing the tucked-shirt version, perfect for an informal dinner out or other event that doesn’t call for suit and tie or formal attire. (more…)

Sometimes I feel like such the evangelist, talking up Mhaijik Guillaume’s jewelry designs every chance I get. I really can’t stop, though, and I think she deserves it. As usual, she’s been creatively busy of late, and there are several new pieces for men worth checking out at her shop. Here you see her new Gypsy Necklace, which features three highly detailed, mysteriously colored rings of multi-colored precious metal strung on a knotted leather cord. The design is simple but striking, and the fit is impeccable–it was very easy to adjust the placement on my avatar, and it really looks like I’m wearing the necklace, not just floating it around my neck. Brava, Mhaijik! The Gypsy Necklace is available for L$250. (more…)

What hath Catero wrought?! I wanted to start this segment as a means to briefly sum up seven days worth of men’s style news while still fulfilling the commitments of the real world and maintaining some level of fun in Second Life. There were tons of stuff that warranted coverage this week! Some designers have kept me busy with multiple product releases and the skin market has been in overdrive, not to mention the opening of Hair Fair ‘07.
I highly suggest that you surf the waves of lag and visit Hair Fair. Several stylists (old and new) have some interesting styles for their male customers and its a great opportunity to see where in-world hair trends are heading. Did you know that the AVEDA institute established its presence in SL this week (check the details on the ETD blog)?

I bet you thought I was done with jackets for the season. Hey, I kinda thought so, too. Designer Jonquille Noir of Little Rebel Designs knew better, though, and has surprised us with this new collection of Casual Zip Jackets! I’ve been consistently impressed with Jonquille’s ongoing creative output, her realistic textures and detailing, and her always-reasonable pricing. When guys who are new in SL (or girls shopping for their guys) ask me where they can do some one-stop shopping for a wide variety of good menswear at prices that won’t break the bank, it’s the Little Rebel landmark I drop on them first. A few days ago I decided that I was past due for a trip to Artilleri. I hadn’t been there in a while, and I was wondering what designer Anonia Marat might have been up to lately. It was a worthwhile stop as right up front I found her new Nohea Shirts! I’m a big proponent of Hawaiian shirts in RL, though I usually go more for non-floral patterns as they tend to be less garish. These are somewhat different in that the classic orchid print is actually quite subtle–the colors seem be more carefully tinted than brightly painted. Also included is a black-and-white version of the shirt (pictured here). (more…)

The forecast calls for reign. I learned earlier this week that one of my favourite actors, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, will be playing Henry VIII, one of history’s most notorious monarchs, in a 10-part television miniseries called The Tudors*.
Meyers’ svelte appearance contrasts with the traditional visual portrayal of Henry which has been largely defined by artist Hans Holbein. In a move that seems to have perfectly aligned with the announcement, Solivar Scarborough of Second Thoughts (2t) released his own interpretation based on Holbien’s time-honoured image of the larger-than-life leader. Solivar’s Henry avatar includes a full skin, burly body shape, a suit of royal vestments and a built-in AO with a custom walk animation and 4 stand poses. But that’s not all! Do the words ‘free’ and ‘codpiece’ mean anything to you (if not, google it - you’ll be pleasantly surprised)? (more…)

I was chatting a few days ago with Posy Trudeau about her new Road Agent Coats, which have such a striking and interesting look that I had to ask where she got her inspiration. She responded, “Partly from the movie ‘Brotherhood of the Wolf.’”  That was all it took–as soon as she said the words, I remembered the unique collar of the heavy leather coats worn by characters in that interesting (if imperfect) film.  I raved about what a great stylistic influence this was, and we went on to talk about what we liked and disliked about that film, the availability of the director’s cut on DVD, classics from the Shaw Brothers, movies we’ve seen (”Zodiac”) and would like to see (”The Host”), and “The X-Files.”  Yeah, this is what I love about Second Life.Â
