It’s often difficult to balance one’s real life with one’s Second Life pursuits. As a reviewer I am often riddled with a guilty conscience when I am unable to complete product coverage on some of the great items I view on a weekly basis. I can only imagine whether Ryan and Ben also suffer from Reviewer’s Remorse Syndrome (RRS) or not.
Efforts to soothe my inner turmoil have given rise to ‘This Week in Men’s Fashion’ where I hope to give concise overviews on some of the quality goods popping up all over the grid that enhance the male shopping experience. Through commenting, please lend us your thoughts on this trial component for the blog.
With that being said, let’s take a look this week’s offerings by:

Any day the guys get new shoes from designer Fallingwater Cellardoor of Shiny Things, it’s a good day. Any day I find great new sandals to add to the wardrobe, it’s a good day. Hey, I think this is going somewhere! Fallingwater’s just-out Boho Sandals are a great addition to my SL shoe collection, which is fast approaching Imelda proportions.  It’s definitely a good day.Â
Unsurprisingly, the design on these sandals is gorgeous, with beautiful embossed leather construction enhanced by gleaming metal accents. Fallingwater has previously included smaller and larger sizes with her men’s shoes for ease of fitting, but with these sandals she’s really gone the extra mile. No fewer than five different versions are included, fitted for foot sizes 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40. The very talented Catero Revolution started the review of the first and brand new men’s collection from Paper Couture. I take the relay for the following!
I was dragged in the Paper Couture’s shop by my dear friend and favourite stylist Iumi Cline. She wanted to show me the first Lu sisters’ release for men, and also to play doll with my avie. Girls…
The shop at Tableau is delicately designed and deliciously early 20th century styled. This was the first good surprise. The picture of the Lu sister above the big stairs gives the tone: women of taste with a strong personality. Just like the new spring-summer 2007 collection for men! The clothes are hanging, just like in a real boutique. There is space to walk around and to easily use the camera. The music stream broadcasts classical music (where in SL do you find a shop with a classical music’s stream?). One of the best shopping experiences I had in SL. Omg, time to start, let’s try those new outfits, I can’t wait! (more…)

I recently witnessed an impromptu fashion showdown where the victor assaulted her victim with an array of Paper Couture dresses in a valiant effort to “outclass” the competition. Though the PC weaponry was not the only ammunition in her arsenal they were definitely amongst the most distinct in the seven-round showdown. The display was an illustration of how the brand has become synonymous with haute couture of the highest order. For the line’s multifaceted designers - Ava, Cora, Mare, Mimi and Prue Lu - fashion may be art, but to its clientele their creative work represents glamour, innovation and is a reflection of a luxurious second lifestyle.
My introduction to the flexible, playful and elegant clothing was through a female friend who was so overwrought by the euphoria that she could barely contain herself. I found it all to be highly intriguing, though I must admit being disappointed that male selections were not then an option. Fortunately, my demoralization has been finite. For Spring 2007, Ava Lu has slipped seven men’s outfits into the collection, ranging in price from 200L to 350L. The new additions were brought to my attention by the fashion guerrilla who laid the smack down on her less fashionable counterpart.
Men who have been visually seduced by women wearing the Lu sisters’ couture creations now have the ability to make their own lasting impressions. (more…)

I wear cargo shorts a lot in RL. I live in Los Angeles, so that means from spring, all through summer, and well into fall. They’re quick, they’re comfortable, all the pockets are handy, and they can be more than reasonably attractive and stylish. I have a lot more clothing options in SL than I do in RL, but still…good cargos are a must. Dragontat Zagato recently released these at Desert Moon Clothiers , and they’re well worth checking out. Designer Jesseaitui Petion of Renown has some of the best cloth textures around, and he’s putting them on some of the most interesting shirts I’ve seen in recent memory. If you’ve seen our reviews of (or own!) some of his other shirts, you already know what I’m talking about. Jesse’s new Sexy Button-Down Shirts are aptly named–they are the sexy, and high-class sexy at that. Jesse knows that sometimes a guy just wants to show off what he’s got, and he’s not afraid to help you do just that. You could wear a plain tee under these…but why? (more…)

Designer Maximillion Grant is well known as one of SL’s quality skin designers, and his “Skins By Max” brand is easily one of the most popular. Max recently announced a new entry in his line of male skins, the Envision Series. I myself have never before owned a skin by Max, although I’ve tried on demos. (Hey, when there’s only so much L$ to go around, a guy can only have so many skins in his inventory.) When I read the announcement regarding the new Envision line, I couldn’t wait to take a closer look. Max has clearly put a great deal of thought, care, and effort into not only the artwork for the skins but also the presentation and pricing structure. This new line is well worth your consideration. I’ve had my eye on the Henkei Tattoo Series by Zabitan Assia of FORM Gear for a while now. The artwork for all of the earlier entries in this series has been intricate and amazing, but the design work on the new addition, seventh in the series, especially wowed me. I decided I was ready to move beyond the (more or less) discreet tattoos I’ve been wearing and try something with more substance and presence. This gorgeous upper-body tattoo–with detailed artwork available to cover the arms, shoulders, collarbone, and back–is just the inspiration I needed.
Zab was a little mysterious when I asked him about inspirations for the artwork. “Just the typical dragons I like to use. I use them a lot…[as a] symbol of power, strength, and [they] just generally look cool.” What, you can’t make up a story? “HAHAHA! If there was one worth tellin’, I’d tell ya. :P” (more…)

It’s always a good day when Mystikal Faddoul announces a new release in her line of men’s hair–she’s one of my favorite hair designers in SL. The style I’m featuring here is called “Chico.” This is a casual, youthful style, short in the back and on the sides, slightly longer in front. Overall, it’s pleasantly asymmetrical, yet still well balanced. Carefully placed flexi sections enhance the realism and add life. The tousled strands in front and on the sides, along with the spikey hint of a “rooster tail” in the back, keep “Chico” from looking too sleek or stuffy. (more…)

Late last week at Stellar Designs, I noticed these spiff new Messenger Shorts from designer Lexi Morgan. These are perfect for the warmer spring weather that’s starting to sneak up on us, at least in some parts of the world. They come to about mid-calf, so the cuffs won’t get caught in your bicycle chain as you zip around town on important business or get wet when you go surf-walking at the beach.
The plaid pattern is eye-catching without being too busy, and makes for a nice change of pace from the solid colors shorts always seem to come in. I think these look great with a simple tank, tee or other casual shirt and sandals or sneakers–you may have other great ideas, so feel free to innovate. Although if you manage to make these work with anything involving a bow tie, I’ll be surprised and impressed. And I’ll want to see pictures.

For those suffering from an unwanted “limp wrist” syndrome, Last Call has concocted an effective Rx guaranteed to stiffen those radiocarpal joints. In a recent release of outdoorsy and street savvy gear designed to stroke your sense of machismo, LC provides you with clothes you can be confident in while chopping wood, whitewater rafting, or simply walking your bull mastiffs through the park in.
Boardwalk (275L). Take yourself off the beaten path with these plaid cargo shorts with toggle-tied prim pockets and vintage flecked t-shirt. A nice casual alternative to classic denim, Boardwalk may be ideal for the frat boy or outdoors man looking to throw back a few beers in the woods.
The tee is offered in untucked and half-tucked versions - the latter adding a nice twist that meets the usual tucked and untucked shirt options at a happy medium. With the screened graphics on its reverse the shirt is reminiscent of a memento picked up in remembrance of one’s travels. The plaid patterning of the long shorts lends itself to an air of sophistication. All-in-all the outfit is created for a look of comfort paired with a carefree style.
Pictured left in original colours, Boardwalk is also available in berry stain, jungle, noticed, steel and ultramarine. (more…)

One of my early, vividly recalled experiences in SL was encountering a stunning Jamaican woman while shopping. She had beautiful dark skin and her hair was in long, flexi cornrows. She wore fantastic, brightly colored clothing and was quite striking. I was looking for suits or shoes or something and she told me, “You need to go to the Deimos Boardwalk. There’s a good men’s clothing store there that I bet you’ll like.” I ended up in Barnes Boutique, and the rest is history. Since then, I have wondered at how relatively rarely I encounter persons of color in SL. (It’s not my intent to make a sociological observation or generalize regarding the whole SL population; I’m just commenting on my own personal experience.) Hmm, maybe I’m hanging out in boring areas. Maybe I need to do more exploring. But I also have wondered if this might possibly be due to there being fewer options in skins for people who aren’t Caucasian. (more…)

I don’t know about you, but I go a little bit crazy when I walk into Zabitan Assia’s shop, FORM Gear. (I guess we all go a little bit crazy sometimes…) Part of my problem, I think, is that I want everything in the store. Fortunately, I already have most of it, so I’m relatively safe. Damn him, though, he keeps putting out new stuff, and then I’m caught all over again. He recently hit us with new jeans in two different finishes and a couple of stunning new shirts, including a beater that’s to die for (or from). First, though, take a look at the Til Death Tee, which I’m wearing here with the new Tilt Jeans in the Dark finish. You may have noticed that a lot of Zab’s clothing designs are dark overall, but the richness of color is never compromised–Zab does this combination like nobody else I know. Unsurprisingly, the fabric texturing and shading is expertly done, and the original artwork is a thing of beauty and a joy forever. (more…)

Some of you may already know Ben Vanguard from his own style blog, SL MEN. If you haven’t visited before, go take a look now–I think you’ll like what you see! Ben lives in France, is probably as big a clothes horse as I am, and has his own unique approach to men’s fashion and putting it all together. His “Outfit of the Day” blog entries are a daily must-see. Ben and I have become friends and are enjoying doing some collaborative things, like making “guest appearances” on each other’s blogs. We look forward to trying out other new ideas in the future. In the meantime, enjoy Ben’s first review post here on Men’s Second Style, directly below. Welcome, Ben!

Aren’t you tired of jeans sometimes? Jeans-with-skulls, shredded jeans, stained jeans… Let’s go for a change and wear suits! Ooooh, Blaze Columbia released a new range of “power suits” a few weeks ago. Blaze, you obviously know his work if you have some official or formal outfit in your dressing-room-inventory! Let’s try…
Ben looks exactly like Mister Confident in this suit in “Charcoal”… well tailored, with this deliciously velvety fabric… The jacket is built on the jacket and skirt layer, with a light flexi effect, so the jacket is long enough. Look at Ben, he feels so comfy in his outfit, one can feel he can’t wait to start working on this Monday morning!Â
He chose a classic white shirt from four which went with the suit, and a subtle “Mauve” tie from 11 offered. With such a choice, everybody can mix and match and mix and match… ooops… work work work! Ben also appreciates the very detailed buttons, pockets and collar, I can feel it!Â
The shading is just fine. Great job, Mr. Columbia! Oh, by the way, Ben is wearing the last Fim Fisher’s [Fim Fischer’s Watches, Chapel Stile (48, 113, 23)]: “Sun’s Gate Watch”. The perfect classy finish for the super neat power suit.

I hadn’t stopped by Little Rebel Designs in a while, and when I got there the other day I saw that, as usual, designer Jonquille Noir has a selection of new items handily available right at the front of the Men’s section. What really caught my eye were these Stripe Spring Shirts and Safari Shorts. From the first warm day of spring (or late winter) through the last bearable day of autumn, my RL wardrobe pretty much consists of cargo shorts, lightweight shirts and sandals. Boring? Maybe, but so comfortable. I do try for more variety in SL, but still…the weather’s changing and who wears a suit out on a hike, anyway? Here I’m wearing the Stripe Spring Shirt in Sand and Safari Shorts in Green. (more…)

I have a fairly decent selection of hairstyles in my inventory, but I’m pretty sure I had never actually visited Diversity Hair until last week. That’s when I saw the release announcment from design Aleri Darkes for the new “Complex” style for men and decided to check it out. (I find it can be difficult these days, with so many errands that involve checking out specific items, to drop by a shop just to see what they’ve got. For sake of time and efficiency, I really do rely on announcements from designers. It may be more efficient, but you know what? It’s not as much fun.) This is a casual, somewhat messy style that looks like it was originally cut short but has grown out nicely and still works. I wish my RL hair looked this good after growing out for a while. It’s long enough on the sides to cover your ears, and one of the front strands falls down over your right eye. This is a great style for surfing, skateboarding, bumper cars–any casual weekend outing. It wasn’t easy, but Nex Brannan and I finally managed to coordinate our conflicting schedules well enough to have a little chat/Q&A earlier this week. Nex has always been more than friendly and seems like one of the nicest guys in the virtual world. I remember dropping in at his first small backroom store back in September–hey, I bought a pair of jeans!–and I’m pleased and excited to see his Brutal Gear line of men’s designs taking off and expanding. The recent grand opening of his new shop is a sign not only of that creative growth but surely also of more great things to come. (more…)

So the other day I get an IM from Pompo Bombacci, and he says thanks for taking my free time to write for the blog, which he reads “religiously” (I believe that was the word he used). Now, don’t get me wrong, it’s great to be appreciated (because it is my own free time, in case you’re wondering). But I’m also happy to hear when someone reads regularly, because that means you’re coming back for more, ha-ha suckers! So I thank him for thanking me and for reading, and we chat back and forth a bit. Turns out he’s not just SL Resident Pompo Bombacci–he’s Designer Pompo Bombacci of SLAB Designs, and would I be interested in checking out some of his new casual menswear? Of course I say yes, and here we are. Here you see the Da Bomb Lite Shirt paired with VeEntage Jeans (shown in greater detail below). Da Bomb is pieced together from washed-out, faded denim and well-worn flannel, and it has a kind of reimagined western/cowboy feel. The pack (L$270) includes shirts with sleeves and without, buttoned and unbuttoned, for a total of four different looks. I’m kind of wishing I had taken pictures of more of the the other styles too, but I was afraid of overdoing things. Drop by the shop and check out the various styles in person.

It will come as no surprise to regular readers that I’m a big fan of Mhaijik Guillaume’s jewelry designs. I’m a little behind the curve, as some of these pieces were released a while back, but the others are all brand new, so maybe it all evens out in the end.  A few weeks ago, with very little fanfare, Mhaijik put out these gorgeous gold and silver men’s rings.  The design is simple and classic–just a wide, shiny band of precious metal to adorn your finger.  Each ring is decorated with one of three different designs depicting a gecko.  (The same artwork can be seen screened on the rock slab in the accompanying picture.)  I don’t know why, but geckos make me smile.  Maybe it’s because they remind me of a trip to Maui several years back–the little guys are everywhere, and who doesn’t like to be reminded of a vacation trip?  Or maybe it’s because of those silly Taco Bell commercials.  You remember the ones I’m talking about,  the ones that tied in with the “Godzilla” movie release, where that little chihuahua set a box trap for Godzilla and said, “Here, leezard leezard leezard” to lure him in.  Hey, I laughed.  Maybe I’m the only one. Last weekend Nex Brannan of Brutal Gear opened his first stand-alone store. Openings are always exciting and momentous because they are generally a step beyond renting out a cramped little shop space and a step towards being able to tailor one’s brand environment entirely, allowing for a wholistic shopping experience. The designer becomes the architect of every floorboard and fixture. As a customer, supporter, or friend you can’t wait to see what is rolled out next, because it’s a symbiotic journey. (more…)

Cue the Jan Hammer theme music here, just for a period-appropriate mental accompaniment. You know what I mean–that driving, synth-heavy, moody tuneage that came to define movies and TV of the Eighties in ways both good (”Blade Runner”) and bad (pretty much everything else). The “Miami Vice” theme got way too much airplay, so I know you know it. Hey, you probably had the soundtrack album. On LP vinyl. (Here’s a handy reference link for all you kids out there who have no idea what I’m talking about.) All right, now that the mood has been set, let’s get down to business. Hot on the heels of her recent single-handed Sixties disco revival and side trip to Seventies Vegas, Shai Delacroix has stepped up one more decade to the Eighties to give us her own personal take on Crockett and Tubbs…the Vice Suit. She hinted about these to me a while back, then promptly went on vacation, and I’ve been dying ever since. Curse you, Shai!
